Re: 51 chevy truck 2wheel to 4x4???

Thank you, sounds easy enough. I have to pick them up them up next week when they have them ready. They are still in the truck. Will I need any other parts off the Toyota? Suck as springs front and rear??? I will be using the 77 for tranny and transfer case. Thanks again for the help.

Re: 51 chevy truck 2wheel to 4x4???

I would maybe look at the steering box & linkage just in case. As for springs the Toyotas ride very nice but I'm not sure on the lengths, anything can be incorporated. I guess it depends on what you plan on doing with it as to if you want the 3/4 ton suspension or the Toyota suspension. We have pulled full cords of wood out of the woods with short bed Yotas with out any problems.

The only problem with the S10 is that it has IFS and that does not look right on the old trucks to me.

I personally like a set of Toyota axles under these trucks. The width is perfect for and they are the same 6 lug bolt pattern as Chevy. These axles are very stout and have tons of aftermarket support, there are even tricks to use factory parts and have electric locking differentials. If you decide to go this route you will need a front axle from an 85 or older, or you can get new housings from several venders. In 1986 Toyota went to IFS, all of the rear axles are the same up until the 2000's though.

The Toyota front axles/ hub does not allow a CHEVY RIM to go on. The center of the rim is to small. Or is there a certain year that works?

Re: 51 chevy truck 2wheel to 4x4???

I have not run into this issue before. Probably because I always run aftermarket rims and the center hole is bigger so they can be used for a variety of applications. If you want to use original Chevy rims any machine shop will be able to open the center hole to the size you need. When I run into things like this I take the parts to work and use our lathe or mill.

Re: 51 chevy truck 2wheel to 4x4???

Nice...Lots of work I know.... New question, I'm using the toyota axels, on the 50 frame. I am wondering if the original type front springs will support the 350 motor? The 50 truck is originally a 3600 3/4 ton. I would like to replace the leaf springs front and rear wondering what others have used. Aftermarket or Toyota or ????? Thanks
