Muffler location

Hello fellow members, does muffler location effect sound? would have it route out from under the truck vs turndown change it too?

Re: Muffler location

Yes, everything you change on your exhaust will affect the way it sounds, either from inside the cab or from outside the truck -- or both.

How to quantify those changes is another matter entirely..... if it's even possible.

Re: Muffler location

I can only add that further from the headers the mufflers are the less they add restriction to the exhaust. Gasses will "condense" as they cool. Short exhaust tubes vs. long tubes have a different sound with the general idea that longer is mellower (less rasp). Drone is a thing on its own. Pipe size will also effect sound.

Re: Muffler location

Further back makes the muffler more effective. The gasses have cooled more and have less turbulence as they go further back. The muffler in turn is more effective at quieting the noise.

One of the magazines did a test some years back about this very issue.

Re: Muffler location

Interesting subject here.
I am getting ready to install a modified 396BB into my '69 Chevy and though the PO had what is basically open tubes that exited out the sides in front of the rear wheels, I am going to be following this as I would like to have a quieter setup that had minimal drone.

Re: Muffler location

I've got 30inch glasspacks turnung out right before the back tire. The packs are under the cab. My pipes are 2.5 inch. Makes a nice growl but not to loud.

Good reading with real world testing to back it up.
