Windshield w/trim question

I decided to replace the windshield rubber on my 68 C20 as it was old, hard and leaking.

I had swapped a windshield rubber on another and it went well, but it didn’t have the trim.

So I read a bunch of threads in here to get hints, bought a Precision gasket, and watched the Precision YouTube video.

Took a couple of try’s. Each time I did start pulling my rope from the top. Had a helper pushing from the outside.

The rubber is not sitting right for about 12” on the right top corner. Everywhere else it looks good. There is a gap between the rubber and windshield.

So is the trim not seated properly behind the glass?

If so sny tricks to get that part in?
I am wondering about having a helper press flat hands on the inside of the glass and then trying to tap the trim with my soft hammer?

Or am I starting over?

Re: Windshield w/trim question

Are you sure you have the correct gasket for the trim? I believe there are two different depths of trim and related gaskets. I have also learned that aftermarket trim does not fit very will.

Re: Windshield w/trim question

Two types trim
67 to 70 the clip is wider
71 to 72 the clip is shorter
The correct rubber is needed

Re: Windshield w/trim question

If your gasket is fitting well in all over places, I think it's just stubborn and will take a little work to get it set. Hook with screwdriver handle or little nylons pry bars from Harbor freight help...no hammers or mallets will do anything but make you start over with new glass. Pull out a few more inches on either side of the trouble spot, spray soapy water and use a hook or pry bar to pull in that section, helper should be gently pushing same spot from outside.

Re: Windshield w/trim question

I agree with the wrong gasket theory. It looks like you have deep trim you're trying to seat in a shallow trim gasket.

Re: Windshield w/trim question

So it’s factory trim .....
Gasket is for 67-70 trim

And it fits well all the way around except for 12”

Re: Windshield w/trim question

The precision gasket video says to start at the top. Makes sense to me. Get those two corners in first. Also when you are pulling the rope it at the bottom last it will apply pressure to the top and help it seat. I just put a back glass in mine yesterday. I used glass cleaner as the lubes in the glass slot. Minor pain but easy overall. I started at the bottom on it as that's where the corners are. Pull a little and slap the glass every so often.. You can watch the rubber seat.

Re: Windshield w/trim question

We did this on my kids Jimmy project. A 72. We tried a half dozen times to get it all installed with no success. We had a donor 69 and decided to try that trim instead and it all went together correctly. We ordered the right weatherstrip and it seams they sent the wrong weather strip. It does matter.

Re: Windshield w/trim question

Did you check if the inner rubber lip at that point went over the steel lip
That could keep it pushed out a bit as well

Re: Windshield w/trim question

I have the exact same issue installing my chrome. I bought 2 sets of aftermarket chrome thinking my oem was bent. I’ve tried to install twice and even hired a glass shop twice. Still can’t get it to seal up on the corners. I appreciate all of the suggestions as well, keep them coming please.

I did. I was able to pull the rubber down inside to see if the pinch weld was bent. It all looked ok.

I am starting to wonder if there was something in the rubber channel where the trim sits. But before I stalling it was sitting fine and I taped the rubber to the glass to ensure it stayed in place.

Re: Windshield w/trim question

Just because it in the truck does not guaranty its year correct in a 52 year old truck
67 72 trim lip should be around 3/4 of an inch 71 72 are abouf 1/2 deep

The other thing is to insure it does not pop out of its seat while installing

Re: Windshield w/trim question

I do agree that it is possible that my truck could have 71/72 trim OR I could have received the wrong rubber in a bag marked 67-70.

BUT if either were the case, why would the trim and rubber fit 90% of the way around but leave a bulge over 1 foot of the window?

I hoping to find some time later this week, and a helper again, to try lube it up and see if something will slip into place better. Failing that I may pop the windshield out again.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions.

Re: Windshield w/trim question

If gasket and trim sit well everywhere else both must be matched for correct year range

The rubber atleast on my new gasket has a second inner lip has that been pulled over the frame ?

I did not save any of my old gaskets on previous trucks i cut the rubber out to save on broken glass in the driveway

Other area i would check has the trim popped out of the gasket at that point if its not seated in its channel can be an issue as well
