transmission shift lever

Has anybody here removed the shift cable from the transmission shift lever, Im asking this because mine fell off the other day and stranded me. I'm wondering if it is a clip that came off. I ordered a new lever just waiting for it and hopeing it comes with a clip. I took the lever off today and the stud is pretty corroded. I can't believe what the road salt here in massachusetts is doing to my 2003

Re: transmission shift lever

There isn't a clip that holds it on. It just pops on and off. The plastic in the end of the cable may be stretched. Might be time for a new cable.

Re: transmission shift lever

Ok, thanks for the reply. I guess I have to hope the new lever fits tight.

Re: transmission shift lever

I just realized I didn't post an update to the situation. It is a 2003 silverado 5.3. I ended up taking the shift lever off cleaning it up painting it drilling about a 1/8 hole through the stud and used a stainless bolt and 2 lock nuts and used a nickle as a washer. my issue was the shift cable was worn I think ( its been a while) the plastic clip was worn or broken so I didn't want to replace the shift cable. the repair seems solid and so far no issue. thanks for the info above
