Re: Tow Truck/Rollback/Hauler Pics

It is the Heavy Duty version, I've only seen a few on here. I didn't mean to hi-jack the thread either, just thought it would be a good truck for a wrecker.
"H22 1SPD REAR AXLE" plus the "18x5.0 KELSEY 10STUD" makes her pretty tough. I'm always looking for more info on these trucks, that's why I chime in randomly.
All six wheels are 10bolt, there is just 5 studs on the front, like a medium duty.
.....and the 292 and tow hooks were gone when I got her......

Re: Tow Truck/Rollback/Hauler Pics

Forgot to mention- parking brake on the drive shaft, power brake booster under the cab, and the vent for it through the cab floor.

Re: Tow Truck/Rollback/Hauler Pics

That color green reminds of an old moving truck rental company like U-haul. I can't remember their name but if I recall they did run Chevys. Their logo had elephants following each other trunk to tail or something like that.

Re: Tow Truck/Rollback/Hauler Pics

Well, it looks like you got the HD Wheels, but it doesn't seem like you got the optional HD 11,000 Lb Rear as I don't see it listed and the GVW is listed as 10,000. Interesting truck still though. Canadian built trucks can be a little different and I really don't understand a lot of those differences. The Parking Brake and Brake Booster are also interesting. My suggestion is to start a new a whole new topic on the forums here to try to get some attention of guys who would be more familiar with what you have.

If you start one, I'll be watching for sure.

Re: Tow Truck/Rollback/Hauler Pics

Post #19 shows a red GMC tow body with HD option. It's the 13,000# axle. I have a high hump/AC/cab light cab with that vent in the floor,so that cab is from a HD 1t...a very nice one with Custom Comfort & Convenience option. National Rental,I believe was that truck rental company with the green trucks and three tail to trunk elephant logo. But I'm not sure they'd order the HDs. It does look like the same color, like Sunbelt Rental.

Re: Tow Truck/Rollback/Hauler Pics

Brings back memories I drove wreckers like those for 10 years when i first started driving as a carrier that how i learned TTrailer work starting out on small and then moving to large trucks.I wouldn't mind having a restored wrecker. Last year at the Vintage Truck show in Yellow Springs OH. there was a restored I believe 70 C-30 with a Holmes 440 on it real nice. And a Studebaker roll back all restored the man was retired from GM it had a small Detroit Diesel in it.

Re: Tow Truck/Rollback/Hauler Pics

Did you haul from Baltimore? I like that Studebaker. Was that a factory diesel? I know they offered Detroit 3-53s in even lighter trucks. This one had a 4-53 swapped in pace of the original 3-53. It has a 5spd,too.

Re: Tow Truck/Rollback/Hauler Pics

I don't think that truck came with a diesel the man who owns it said he made it a diesel, when I go this year I'll see if it's finished if so I'll take updated pictures.

I never knew the old Stude's had Detroits. Interesting truck. Sounds good.

BTW, that Red Studebaker will not run right with that black paint on it. All Detroits need to be Detroit Green, lol.

Re: Tow Truck/Rollback/Hauler Pics

Gotta be green! My neighbor has a buddy with a Detroit powered Astro 90. He hauled a lowboy loaded with rolls of chain link to his house yesterday,so I got to hear him gearing down to stop, backing it in,and pulling out. I should go over and thank him.

I didn't show this one,did I? This was for sale not far from me a little while ago:

Re: Tow Truck/Rollback/Hauler Pics

One of the nicest 2-Ton Wreckers I have ever seen. I personally would had like it better with the original 6 though, which just about had to be a 292. Hasn't met reserve yet, wonder what it will finish off at?

Here's one I brought home today. 72 Big Block Cheyenne Super. This truck runs and drives. I'm going to have a tough time deciding to dismantle this one.
