When I rebuilt the 383 for my '72, I bought a NAPA thermostat. Just recently, my truck started to over heat. Pulled the thermostat and it was stuck shut. Put it in a pan to boil it and it opened once It got to 255*. So being the unintelligent individual that I am, I went back to NAPA, showed it to them and they gave me a free new one. 2 days ago, It starts to over heat. Pull the thermostat and it is stuck shut.

What is a good quality AMERICAN made thermostat that I can buy. I am fed up with chinese/mexican sh!t.

Good luck asctually finding one made here. I generally use stant for thermostats and radiator caps and have had any issues that I can remember. You can always hit up the dealer too and get an ac delco part.

That sucks that you got two bad ones in a row. Did NAPA stand behind them?

I am curious, how did you get the water in your pot to 255 degrees?

They replaced the first one for free. I haven't went back with the other one.

To get the water to boil I filled a big kettle type pot with salt water (boils at a higher temp), got the weed burner out and got it to a rolling boil of about 255*(+/- 5*).

Most of the other important stuff like Guns and ammo are as well. Most performance parts are still made here too. I think we got all the bases covered lol. Yea its kind of sad manufacturing is all but gone here.

Fact about boiling salt water:
"The boiling point of salt water will rise by about half a degree Celsius for every 30 grams of salt dissolved per liter of water."

Wow you must have used quite a bit of salt to get to 123.8 degrees C (255 F).

Not being confrontational, just sayin...

So how much salt DID you use? Inquiring minds want to know.

Wouldn't it be easier to preheat an oven to 250 F and throw it in there? That's what I've used for testing temp sensors and such.

I always use Stant SuperStat i have never had one go bad and the better part of ten years selling auto part never saw one come back bad.

Not as tho it means anything, but the last 2 NAPA thermostats I bought were crap also and one stuck open and never closed, the other would open at 240, drop to 160, back to 220+ and down to 160, back to 220,, not really unusual but it would NEVER stabilize. Up and down, up and down over a 76mile drive in 105 temps with the AC on.

Gave up and ordered a few RobertShaw thermostats from Slummit and ,,, opens at 195-200, drops to 180 and STAYS there. Don't know where there made but they work well (damn well ought to for $25 a piece)

i install super stants and never had a problem mine opens at 200 and temps drop down around 190

This is making me think, maybe my temp gauge fluctuating is not wrong, maybe its just the Napa t-stat I put in. Time to pick up the AC delco t-stat

I just got a new John Deere thermostat for an 830 for my Ford. It is made in USA. I ordered one for a John Deere 4440 for my GMC (smaller diameter) and it is also made in USA. From experience I know that they are good.

When you're dead, it's only a problem for the people around you, because you don't know you're dead. .....It's kinda the same when your STUPID. I just did my taxes and reviewed my SS statement. Thanks to the current administration it looks like I will only have to work till noon on the day of my funeral.
