Found Temp sender that works with Original Gauge

NAPA Ecklin TS6666 sender works perfect with Original Gauge. You can get the 1/8 pipe adapter for the LS at Speedway.com . We hooked a real time scan to it and ran it for ~1/2 hour.
Sender is at the back of Passenger side head
Pics tell the story

yes, which would be very close to normal for an LS

I need to give a BIG THANKS to the guy at NAPA who took the time to help me look though his books to come up with this. Wish I could remember his name. Will be going back to say thanks for sure

Would this work on my truck? 1978 C10, gathering parts for my 2002 5.3/4L60e swap.

the simplest solution would be to drill & tap the head and use the original sending unit. plus, the gauge would read correctly too.

Why take the chance of messing up drilling and taping. I'm a machinist and would have no problem. This is simply screw it in, most everybody can do that and the gauge IS correct
Just my 2c

It depends on what Ohm's your gauge works at. I want to say that in my search I saw an 1/8 pipe sender for a late 70's . All you would need is the metric adapter from Speedway.com. Sorry I don't have the number but shouldn't be hard to find
Good luck

If the picture you posted is what you consider "correct" and you're happy, then I suppose that's ok.

YES I consider this correct. This is where the gauge would set with a small block or BB at 180 degrees F. An LS runs at ~210 F so again YES this would be correct
And YES I'm happy, are you?? KIS keep it simple

Re: Found Temp sender that works with Original Gauge

Thanks for taking the time to come.up with the correct sending unit. Its great to have a bolt in option..

We all know that a drill and tap can make the stock sender fit. I personally didn't want to chance messing up the head.

Especially if you try to do it in the truck. No fuss no muss this way

I'd like a sender that puts the needle vertical at operating temp. Any idea what voltage/resistance that would be at? I thought my gauge or sender was funky because of the placement all this time, as that's a strange spot to place the needle. I guess having that speedway part opens up some options (have the part number by chance?).

Actually I guess you could always just add the correct resistance in series or parallel inline with the sender wire to put it exactly where you need it, regardless of the sender used.

Because an LS runs at ~210 I like where the gauge sets, to each his own on that. I would have to look up the Speedway adapter #. It's easy to find on Speedway.com

Re: Found Temp sender that works with Original Gauge

Speedway link to adapter

ECHLIN TS6666 1633.2 Ohms @100° 156.6 Ohms @ 220°

I believe the stock gauge is 80 ohms being hot and 900 being cold.

link to Napa catalog book

The TS6655 on page 31 should put the gauge a bit more in the middle. I will buy and test one, some day project engine is still sitting next to the truck
with 1087 Ohms @100° and 111 Ohms @220°

Awesome find 1970 CTS Short Wide

Re: Found Temp sender that works with Original Gauge

Auto Meter 2277 Adapter

Note: I.D. of this adapter where the sender probe will go through is .309 and would require drilling to approximately 5/16" or .312 for a Stewart Warner sender to pass through.

TS6666 WILL NOT CLEAR center bore (Must drill !)

Re: Found Temp sender that works with Original Gauge

FWIW here's a graph of the stock sender. If someone wanted to compare it to this one, that'd be handy data!

Somewhere I have a graph I actually plotted on my own in the kitchen with a thermometer and my own sender...

I found a pdf of an Eichlin - Engine Management Reference Guide and these are the specs it had listed for the TS6666

TS6666 1 threaded stud
156.6Ω@220°F, 1633.2Ω @100°F
1/8 x 27 Dryseal
