Was the spare tire standard under bed? And in bed spare an option?

Was under bed the same standard size?
I need one and trying to avoid pulling one off and seeing if it fits.
I have a 72 lwb.

Re: Spare tire in bed or under bed?

I have the under bed carrier, but bought an in-bed carrier for the spare. I've spent enough time on the ground working on vehicles that I will avoid it whenever possible, these days. And I just know that if I get a flat tire, it'll be raining and muddy, even if it has to start right when I get the flat tire.

I hear you. Getting that spare in and out is a pita. I have a 4" lift so I have more room, but it ain't no fun. Plus I have a Detroit locker. If I get a flat in the rear I have to put the spare on the front and the front tire onto the rear. Didn't even try to stuff a 33" tire under there. I bought the smallest tire they could put on the rim... and that's 'tiring' enough to set up under there.

I'd hate to change a tire on some of these dropped trucks! Do they require a lift just for a flat?

Mine is stock height and I am looking for an under bed spare tire carrier.

There's a trick to getting the spare out. You need to use the jack. Jack the pressure off the bracket then loosen the nut with the lug wrench handle. Lower the spare as far as it will go. Go to the other side of the truck and yank the bottom of the jack out with the scissor jack handle and let the bracket flop down. Roll the tire off the off the bracket on the edge of the tire. When you get the spare off, I generally reinstall into the carrier back at the ranch. You get your arm under it when it comes down... you'll get a beating for a lesson!

Re: Spare tire in bed or under bed?

I haven't carried a spare in years. My hitch just doesn't leave room.

I *really* want to get a longbed cut-out fender for my stepside, however, so I can mount one.

I've got that optional swing down carrier and they built the hitch around that and I had the exhaust done around that

I actually just let it lay in the bed, not bolted down or anything fancy like that. Just, in there.

Re: Spare tire in bed or under bed?

my 68K20 has the origonal split rims including the spare under the bed. I dont know who' they thought they were kidding but that combo is way too heavy. Aint no gas station gonna do it for me either. The minute they see a split rim they run away like I pulled the pin on a grenade

Re: Spare tire in bed or under bed?

I'm not a big fan of the stock tire carrier. You could whip up something like I did on the cheap. I've got $20.00 something bucks invested in this. The winch came of a Mitsubishi truck. Some scrap metal, little welding, some bolts & nuts, and no more cussing the stock set-up! I set it up so the the crank rod is on the passenger side of the truck. Painted it yellow so I can find it in the tool box.

Truck shops may do split rims for you. They are not as dangerous as most shops think, they have probably never been taught how to work with them.

Fabbed. I need a narrower spare though.

Looks good! I'm debating on whether to put mine up front like yours, or near the back.

Good question. Where was it factory installed? I've got mounting holes at all four possible location. Seems like a PO had four spares at one time?

Re: Spare tire in bed or under bed?

Front I think. 1/2 ton tire might fit in the back, but 3/4 ton (stock style) won't. I'll be on the lookout soon for an in bed, because my fuel tank will be occupying the location under the bed.

On my truck, it was under the bed. I know a guy with a '48 3100 1T step side that has TWO spares. Truly cool, even if they are some shiny aluminum wheels.

Got mine from LMC. It's a pretty simple kit. I'll have to roll the tire into position and find out. I'd prefer the rear, because if I get a flat while camping there will be a ton of stuff in the way. That will mean I have to buy another truck to haul stuff.

Re: Spare tire in bed or under bed?

Thanks for the replies. I should have said I've got the side mounted spare on my spid, one correct looking mount, and four sets of possible holes. So a 1/2 ton spare goes in front, but which side?

Sorry for the thread jack.

Driver side gives you no blind spot. Passenger side the tire would block your view. Which is to bad cause it would balance the drivers weight

Yes on the drivers side front. But it won't take a large tire!
