Guess what this hole was for

Been lurking for years, started a truck 69 gmc longbed and had to sell it, and finally got a new one 70 c10.
I keep wanting to start a build log, just haven't gotten around to it. I will.
As many of you have seen numerous "modifications" over the years, I wanted to ask your help.
Can anyone identify what this hole was created for? That's between the driver's side door and the instrument cluster.

Re: Guess what this hole was for

I have a similar hole or holes in the same location on my 70 c30. Maybe it was a trend back then to lock a chimpanzee in the cab with a cordless drill.

Re: Guess what this hole was for

I agree. This one had been dropped, without changing the original ball joints or shocks. Lol. It does seem to be a 2 owner vehicle tho.

Re: Guess what this hole was for

Here is a larger area of the hole.
The corresponding hole on the outside cowl. Note the amazing handiwork.
And the strange grommet I found on the roof, filled with Bondo as well. I assume this corresponds to the cb radio mount holes under the lip of the dash.

Re: Guess what this hole was for

My C30 had emergency lights mounted on the roof at one time so the were several roof holes also.

Re: Guess what this hole was for

This one only has one grommet, center of the roof. But it came power steering, brakes, tinted windows, a/c , heavy duty suspension, so a spotlight wouldn't surprise me.

Re: Guess what this hole was for

That dash to pillar hole was definitely a spot light.
Maybe the roof was also. Mine had a roof mounted spot when I bought it back in 89. Get that hole sealed up or you will end up needing a new roof/cab. Ask me how I know...

Clay68c10- Never seen a roof mounted spotlight. But, I wish they were both still there, guess it's just two more things to keep a look out for at the junkyard.

Re: Guess what this hole was for

Maybe it was some type of rescue or emergency truck in the past?

Re: Guess what this hole was for

@ klb. Who knows?
There is an inner hole to match the roof hole as well. Time to collect pictures, and start searching for parts. If I can find em, I'll put them back on.
Thanks for your help!

Whatever was mounted north of the original rear view mirror mount was probably the "controller" for whatever was mounted in the center of the roof panel. I'm guessing it was a strobe of some sort or other type of light bar. Check around the edges of the roof inside the door jambs for some mounting holes or marks where something may have been wedged there or for mounting holes.

It could also have been an antenna maybe, although that seems like an extreme measure to cut a hole for an antenna!

Re: Guess what this hole was for

There are no real marks on the door jamb, but I would think a roof rack type accessory would not need a hole drilled as well. But your right, that would be overkill for an antenna. It seems no one takes pictures of the interior roof of the cab.

Re: Guess what this hole was for

It could have also been a siren or megaphone.

Checkout this thread of ambulances:
