Re: rustoleum paint jobs

rustoleum is fine for a beater ... but you're in for a BIG surprise if you ever want to take that rustoleum crap off and put on a real automotive coating.

to be honest mine was painted with black rustolem when I got it ...and a crappy job at best..it sanded off with some 80 grit pretty easy..and if you ever choose to do it with automotiuve paint there are always options like soda blasting

Re: rustoleum paint jobs

well men what I can tell you is that the local Lowes does NOT carry valspar that can be tinted....I'm going to do a check online to see if they can at some of the near by stores....both of which I have to drive by a tractor supply???

But the nice young lady did a scan of my ashtray and the Copper my truck was it may very well be again!!!

on a side note maybe someone could snap a pic of of discribe where the cut lines are.....my plan is the bottom of the A pillar and even with the chrome under the rear window...just not sure where or if the doors get invovled and if the white roof wraps over the rain gutter in the door jam???

Help??

That looks nice, sprayed or rollered ??

I disagree with the statement that you have to take it all off to put on a quality automotive paint. This stuff is Synthetic or Alkyd Enamel paint. When fully cured, whether hardener was used or not I would believe this stuff was as good a base for another paint job as any primer would be... As long as proper prep such as sanding and de-greasing was done PRIOR to the Rustoleum paintjob I see no reason why it isn't just as good a primer for a later paintjob... You'd want to block it, then lay on epoxy to seal it, then your primers...Of course starting with bare-metal is always best when you can do so but nobody says you have to...

They way my daughter drives, I think she's getting Tractor Supply paint on her 4Runner with hardener !!

Re: rustoleum paint jobs

I'm not sure if they can tint it or not. Never actually used the paint itself, just the hardener. The reason it's more expensive is it's actually automotive restoration paint for tractors and other farm equipment. Pretty durable stuff from my understanding. I'm not sure if Lowe's would carry something of that nature. I think their stuff is mostly latex isn't it? That would work on metal, but other than that, I have no idea of how it would hold up.

Re: rustoleum paint jobs

Something i'm going to try. I have a couple of small bags of powder candy and pearl. I'm going to mix with some Rustoleum and see how it turns out. Do a test panel or something. I bought the stuff at this link. Fairly cheap.

Re: rustoleum paint jobs

gold flake is hard to paint, or any flake as far as that goes. the stuff im talking about is a very fine powder. almost like powdered sugar. you just mix it into your thinner, reducer, etc. mix paint like you would normal spray it. i've used it with enamel. turned out pretty nice. i didn't have a paint booth and got trash in everything. having to repaint it.

Adding pearls and kandy straight to a base coat is a lazy man's way of getting it in to the mix without having to worry about the clear coat sanding and such. anytime anything like this is added to clear coat, it has to be a high quality paint job, runs and such cause when sanding, clear coat you'll rub the metallic flat. Keep in mind, acrylic enamel is a gloss paint. Clear coat will enhance the glossy appearance of the color coat. For projects (work trucks, used cars, etc.) where cost is a major concern, you may wish to forego purchasing the clear coat

it can be added to just about anything from what i've read.http://www.paintwithpearl.com/pearluses.htm

Re: rustoleum paint jobs

sounds like a plan around here a single stage paint job can cost anywhere from $300 to $500. And that's with the body work already done.

Re: rustoleum paint jobs

For the money involved it seems worth the risk, depending on the vehicle and the expectations. Did everyone read the HAMB link? post #113 click the link and read up on the Corvair. Pretty cool.
For as many haters it seems there are also lovers.
Back to the expectations.
Paint remover may be the ticket to removing it if needed later down the road.

Be sure to read post #92 as well ....

I did the hood on my Plymouth with Rustoleum and a roller. Took a qt of white, and had the kid at the counter add blue oil-based house paint toner to it from the counter til it looked about right. My whole goal was to match the rest of the car - meaning, look like crap. It worked! I thought my dad was going to have a coronary to see his eldest son ROLL paint onto a hood. He is currently restoring a '64 Ferrari 275 GTB.

Here's the paint I was talking about from Lowes. It is a tintable enamel.
