what year 14 bolt for my 72 4x4

I know that this info is prob out there but I'm not sure what's true and what's not. I want to upgrade to a 14 bolt ff with 6 lugs. Did GM make this? And will it fit in my truck? I know that I'll need a new driveshaft. This is what I have, 1972 k10 4x4 swb. o ya. I would like to have a 6 lug because I just got 4 new mt classic II's with the 6 lug pattern. Can I convert an 8 lug? please help!

Full-floats were never 6-lug. Someone on here did a FF 6-lug conversion, but it required considerable machining.

Re: what year 14 bolt for my 72 4x4

You can get a SF 14 with 6 lugs. They are significantly stronger than a 12 bolt. If you are going to build up an axle or make any changes and want to stay 6 lug, that's what I would do.

I have a 4.10 geared SF 14 with 8 lugs. I have been pretty happy with the swap, just not the Gov-Lok.

I have broken at least 6 12 bolts, so I am not a fan. Would have been miles ahead with the SF swap years ago.

There was a 14 bolt, 6 lug axle available in the 88-98 generation of trucks. They were in the lighter GVW version of the 3/4ton. They have meteric lugs though, 14mm IIRC.

I figured someone out there made hub conversions, I just never knew who they were. However at $380 a pair ($760 for all 4), I'd just buy a new set of wheels.

I'm rebuilding my current 10 bolts with new bearings, seals, and 4.56 gears. I considered the option of going 14 bolt, but I dont/won't ever need that kind of beef in my axles. My K5 will be a daily driver and see some light off-road, so no point in going 8 lug. Also, I just bought new wheels and tires so it's beneficial in my case to stay 6 lug. They dont make any decent alloy wheels in a 15" 8 lug configuration.

I'd look for that 88-98 6-lug 14-bolt,the semi-floater. Look for 2500 4wds with no fender flares and 6-lugs.

You wouldn't need 4 unless you were trying to build a 6x6 for some reason. Just one set for the rear. That's actually not a bad deal IMO. You could shave the FF 14b slap those bad boys on there and have never ending beef for very little investment.

FWIW,
Another source for a 6 bolt rear with the 14 bolt cover are half ton diesel trucks and suburbans up to 98. They will have 3:73 gears in them.

Some Z71 extended cab 1/2 tons had 6 lug SF14, as well as 2x4 2500 light duty 88-98 trucks.

I believe it was more common with the GMC and not the Chevy. But you have a solid axle fe and the newer rigs had ifs.
