Here's the correct knob for a 205 t-case:

Not sure about your last question.... a 205 turns the front drive shaft only when in 4WD mode.

Re: 72 with a suspected 205 transfer case

i did get a shift knob off one of the guys and i thought it to be right for a 205 and had the samr markings as you show but i question the knob when i went to install on the stick and the stick has a smaller thread than the knob so here i am questioning the transfercase . and the truck seems to always be turning the trans shaft to diff so i have not got in the right spot if its a 205 - i will be checking thanks

Re: 72 with a suspected 205 transfer case

With the truck in park, jerk the transfer shifter all the way back & forth several times Sometimes the shift rods get crossed up & this will help....I know it sounds crazy but just bought an '81 1ton with 205 the other day & neutral was not where it was supposed to be , after several jerks it was correct with the pattern again

That happens to be a Ford 205. However, the Chevy one looks nearly identical, just with the front output drop on the other side.

Re: 72 with a suspected 205 transfer case

the 203 transfer turns the front drive shaft all the time. The 203 transfer will not have the small round plate with the 3 bolts in it.

Re: 72 with a suspected 205 transfer case

thanks for all the info - i have found 2wheel drive and the transfer case does have the small 3 bolt cover and the drive shaft for the front diff now is rotating by hand - 2 wheel drive . so i do have a 205 but the shifter ball that was onn it is marked marked and when i purchased a ball - marked as shown it is a larger thread diameter - so i have the same shift pattern but wrong shifter or this ball is wrong .
