14 10.5" Bolt Locker

Anybody have any experience with Powertrax lockers? I'm looking to install one in my 14 bolt on the 79 to help it out a little bit when conditions deteriorate, and want to make sure it's decent and will hold up.

Not specifically in a 14bolt, but I have installed a few of them. They go in easily and hold up well. Be aware that it will drive a bit different, especially in wet or snowy weather. Caution anyone that you let drive it about this too.

Nothing wrong with the Powertrax and I have 3 LockRights myseld, but as far as full-float 14's go, that's the cheapest Detroit you can get which would make that a no-brainer.

The ones in the 14 bolt seem to be better than their smaller versions. I have seen them break too, but not nearly as often. Gov-loc

They got that name for a reason. Fortunately, the 10.5" 14bolt Detroit is very inexpensive (as far as lockers go) and easy to install.

And now Yukon offers their Grizzly Locker for less than the Detroit. Side by side they are same design. Stuck one in the rear of mine. It's tough and a snap to install.

I'm pretty sure if you do have a Gov-Bomb in your FF 14 you will need to buy an open case to install any of the drop-in Lockers including the Detroit or Grizzly. Which means changing the case will require you to measure and possibly adjust the backlash on the ring gear as well. It will also require swapping out the carrier bearings which adds a different level of complication to the swap.

You might be right. That thing looks like a cone shaped deal with a screen in two holes of the surface. Weird. Can't see any spider gears or anything.

Re: 14 10.5" Bolt Locker

That's what the open case looks like also BTW. You can't see the spiders just the spider gear shafts. I think the screen thing is what makes me think it's a Gov-Bomb. Give Google Images a shot and you'll see a bunch.

Also head over to Pirate4x4.com and check out the 14 bolt bible.

Re: 14 10.5" Bolt Locker

a open carrier will be a 4 pin carrier and a gov loc carrier will be a 3 pin, ive run the loc rite and liked it but for the money go grizzly or detroit.

Re: 14 10.5" Bolt Locker

The aftermarket Eaton posi is different from the OEM Eaton Gov-Lok. The Gov-Lok, or Gov-Bomb as it is "affectionately" known uses gears, springs, and flyweights to apply pressure to the clutch packs. It is not truly a "locker" but a limited slip that functions as an open diff most of the team.

If you hammer on it alot and cause the mechanism to attempt to engage, you can strip gear teeth or otherwise cause it to come apart. It "blows up" like a bomb if you will.

Google Images for 14 bolt Gov-Lok and enjoy the carnage. With that said, the 14 bolt version is at least the strongest version. The 12 bolt one pretty much grenades when you look at it funny.

Re: 14 10.5" Bolt Locker

Well it seems generally it looks favorable so, I do believe I'll order one up, sure would be nice to abolish the one wheel wonder. 10 year old balding tires + open diff, along with majority of the weight all sitting up front, just doesn't cut it when conditions worsen around here . Would do tires first but for the brand I'm after, I'll stick with a detroit for now

Re: 14 10.5" Bolt Locker

So to replace the Gov-Bomb I will need a carrier too? If so would an open carrier be a good choice and just buy the Detroit to go in it?
