What paint stripping disc brand

What paint stripping disc brands are you guys using for the 4 1/2" angle grinder?

I've been using the harbor freight "warrior" brand for a couple years and now looking to switch to something safer. It seems their quality is even lower than imaginable to the point of a safety concern. I've never had this much trouble with them until this weekend. As with any "disc" whether it be a cut off wheel, grinding disc, flap wheel, or these paint stripping discs, I always turn it on quick while the grinder is directly in front of me to make sure I tightened the nut all the way.

This weekend I went to purchase 5 paint stripping discs from harbor freight since I go through them quick and found this method works best for me. The first one I installed I did a quick start up and the stripping sponge of the disc flew off leaving the backing plate still attached. After investigating it seems the glue was not strong enough or not enough glue. No one got hurt and I tried another disc. This one stayed on after I started it quick and began working on my hood. After a bit the disc flies off. Again no one got hurt. I'm thinking to myself this is getting a bit riduculous. Took out a third one, attached it to the grinder, started it up quick, and the sponge flies off. I checked the packaging of the discs and made sure these have the same rating for my grinder which they do. Like I said I've been using these for a couple years so it's not inexperience or not using the tool improperly as I've never had this much of an issue before. I finally gave up and realized you get what you pay for. I didn't even open the other 2. I am going to take all these 5 back and get my money back.

I've been checking out other brands, but not sure which one to go with. 3m makes good products - a bit pricey, but I'd be willing to pay the price if it means no one gets hurt. I've heard you have to buy an attachment for your grinder for these discs to work. I've never seen this brand in person, so I'm not completely sure how it works. The pics online look like it's two pieces which means it's not glued to a backing plate which might be a better option.

I've also seen online the green bristles I think called a roloc disc? I've never used this, I think they work much like the stripping discs I'm talking about. The price seems a bit steep though. That's why I've been sticking with the sponge looking discs and they work great for what I need.

I'm hoping to hear what brand of materials for the angle grinder you guys are using for removing paint.

Thanks

Re: What paint stripping disc brand

I use lots of 3m products....you get what you pay for....if you've had luck with the cardboard freight stuff before maybe it was just a bad batch...

Have you used the 3m version of what I'm talking about? Or were you just stating that in general 3m makes good products?

Re: What paint stripping disc brand

Thanks for all the help guys!

Greg - what is the difference in those two attachments? The green one sells for $30 where the purple is $15. Does the green one outlast the purple by at least double? I can usually do a panel with a purple disc or the harbor freight version.

I didn't realize it when I posted that pic but the green one is for a angle grinder...the ones we use are the same but the roloc version on both in 2" and 3"

Right on. So what is the better buy? Is it worth the extra money to buy a green disc or buy the purple disc?

What brand do you use? Any issues with the sponge portion of the disc flying off its backing plate from lack of glue or anything?

Cool. I think for now I might try 3m's purple disc. I'll have to invest in the backing plate which looks to be a seperate piece. This might be a better concept anyway since both pieces would be locked down instead of relying on the glue.

What do you use the green discs for then? I still might have to try that... I've wanted to for awhile - the price detours me every time. Do you use it to prep metal for welding or something?

Re: What paint stripping disc brand

here's a vid of the bristle brush in action........https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ufVo93qLEqQ. .we use them to clean rusty metal ...better than a wire brush cause your not slinging wires everwhere....I thought I had some in the shop but I'm out of em

the roloc system is great...it lets you swap styles of discs with a simple twist...you'd have to get the spindle and proper size backer....
here's a piece of rusty painted metal that I hit quickly the the sand disc and the scotchbrite style
this is what I use mostly at home....I use lots of the sanding discs and finish up with the scotchbrite style.....you can get all diff grits....

Re: What paint stripping disc brand

Norton makes one that looks like the purple one glued to a backer I've never had it separate and it out lasts the 3M brand and cuts paint better. I have found them at Lowes, Home Depot and sears cost about $11 ea.

They come in 3 colors black, blue and orange.......blue does better than the black and I haven't tried the orange because I've only seen them online.
