Newer clsss 5 truck hitch on a squarebody

Anyone had any success putting a hitch from a newer truck on your squarebody frame?

I want to rent trailers(500lb max tongue) and my cheap butt knows I can snag one off a newer truck in a yard or partout easily for a fraction of what a newer one will cost.

If you have a spare tire carrier that mounts under the bed you may have to remove it.

you may check my build thread.

I used a late model class 3 hitch. there is really no need for more than class 3 on a square.

Checked it and cool. I know where one of those hitches is locally for $50.

Re: Newer clsss 5 truck hitch on a squarebody

I have a class III hitch on my C20. I had to move the pivot bolt on the spare tire carrier forward about 1 inch. My stock spare tire fits (23585R16), but it is very close to the exhaust. My exhaust exits out the side of the vehicle behind the rear tires.

Yeah I put it on fits great, just had to drill two holes. Watch that you dont pinch the brake light wiring while your tightening it down like I did.

I used this one - Draw Tite 75034. It fits great. I’m not sure what class it is.

Re: Newer clsss 5 truck hitch on a squarebody

Just as an FYI, but any hitch made for a 34" wide frame will work, that means a lot of Ferd frames, any GM cab chassis frame (dump trucks/service bodies with dual rear wheels)

Class 3 is normally plenty, rated at 10,000lbs but only 500 tongue weight, class IV is better at 1,000 lb tongue weight, 12,000lb max. Class V is a little overkill, but gives the best tongue weight at 1,600lb 16,000lbs max trailer.

I know several camper trailers that are less then 8,000lbs, but tongue weight stays around 750, just based on design. If you can, always opt for the higher rated hitch.
