Solvent Tank Solvent

Hello All,

I have an old school safety clean solvent tank and I'm wanting to replace the solvent which is old school. This solvent is not available anymore here in California, does anyone have any recommendations for a good new school solvent? Thanks!!!

Re: Solvent Tank Solvent

solvent is not banned entirely in ca, we have safety kleen service for our solvent and aqueous cleaning tanks in socal..

I'm sure there were formula changes to comply with epa, carb, aqmd, etc. but there are varieties available..

as for the difference, I'll take the solvent over aqueous hands down..

the only aqueous that's moderately effective has to be fresh and heated, but still leaves a residue..

for home use, I would call or visit your local napa, tractor supply, etc. and see what's available..

good luck!

Re: Solvent Tank Solvent

Looks like you have a solution for your needs. Here in southern California in the South Coast Air Basin (SCAB. Really!) a lot of solvents are being snagged off the market. I just lost access to denatured alcohol; now I can't spray shellac unless it comes in a spray can, which makes it expensive.

Re: Solvent Tank Solvent

Kerosene is what I use. When it gets dirty and needs replacing I either use it on the burn pile or recycle it with the waste oil. I do not add ATF to it, but you should wear some good latex gloves when using.

Denatured alcohol? Seriously? That's a pretty mild solvent to be banning.

Heh! Most of the guys in the wood working forum I go to are recommending Everclear! How crazy is that!? That stuff is stupid expensive, what with having a tax stamp and all.

Re: Solvent Tank Solvent

I don't have a parts cleaner but I use diesel for degreasing. Does kerosene work better? I used to use that but ended up always having drained diesel around. So it's been a long time.

Re: Solvent Tank Solvent

I got this old parts cleaner from a friend...his Dad had owned it
No telling how old it is
I refurbished it...except for the inside....patched a few rust holes in the bottom
It even has an air agitator

I had one exactly like that. I didn't use it any more so I put it up for sale. No takers so I finally scrapped it. It worked good and I saved the pump and flex hose/nozzle. You are welcome to it if you want to pay shipping on it. It looks to have an aluminum housing on it. I can post a couple of pictures if you want me to.

By all means...never hurts to keep a spare....thank you! .... I will send you a PM
I actually talked to a guy at the company that owns that brand now.....
He was telling me that was one of the best parts washers ever made and the pumps were so much better than what they have available today.
He also told me that the company that made the cabinets....also made the cabinets for soft drink coolers....
several people have asked me if that was an old Coke cooler....?
Thanks again
