rust neutralizers ?
I have a project I,m working on and there is some rust forming inside the fenders where the headlights go but I don,t have time to remove the fenders right now,I will wait till winter.I can,t get in there good enough but can scrape away the loose stuff,so do you think one of these rust neutralizers they sell in a spray can would buy me some time. Not my fender but I wish.

Re: rust neutralizers ?
I am not a paint and body expert but I use what works for me in the setup I have and have restored a 42, 67 and working on a 41/6. It looks like I am looking at primer which must not be a sealer so eventually the whole fender will start to rust from moisture absortion. So if you can remove the scale and dust and better yet sandblastbut not necessary, I use Zero Rust which is a primer sealer and can be bought in a rattle can after I knock down the blasting with a wire brush or scotchbright. I use it for a primer sealer over a sanblasted area before bondo and filler primer - just scuff it. I also use it for a marker coat to see where all the small dents and dings are before I skim coat. I uses it on wire brushed frames that have not been sandblasted and usually roll it from a gallon can. On a frame it does not have to be topcoated. I am not trying to sell zero rust but I like it for ease of use, does not kill you as fast, and seals the bare metal and rust. Follow directions. I have been using this stuff since 2003.
Even if I am not looking at primer the zero rust will stop it. I coat all the inside of doors and fenders with it also. Can be painted or not. Once I block bondo, if I go to bare metal I will etch prime that area before filler primer. If I missed the point of your post, forget. Yes epoxy priming to begin with is no doubt a better way to go. I do not use rust neutralizers very often but perhaps others do.

Re: rust neutralizers ?
My thoughts are "it is what it is". nothing you do OR dont do is not going to make any difference what so ever since you're planning on taking them off in a few months.
The bottom line with rust is that it needs two things 1) moisture 2) oxygen. Cut those off and you are on your way.

Re: rust neutralizers ?
I was just wondering if these neutralizers are just another snake oil gimick or if they work

Re: rust neutralizers ?
You can continuously bathe the part in a chelation agent or phosphoric acid by using a sprayer and sump pump w/ a kiddy pool for example, or immerse the part in either, but I doubt that's a route you want to take. Immersion in molasses for a few weeks also works, then media blast to clean.
Yes, rust conversion by brushing or spraying something on once is a myth. |

Re: rust neutralizers ?
I've used Ospho (phosphoric acic) to get at hard to reach rust. It seems to work well.
Good luck, Rg

Re: rust neutralizers ?
I've had good luck with Oshpho and Chassis Saver. Both products are using Phosphoric Acid to stop the rust in its tracks.
