New to us 72 Suburban

First of all, I have to give Leon, LockDoc, a huge thank you. H eturned me on to this burb and we almost missed out on getting it purchased. He also helped me go over and get it out of where it was setting. Thanks again Leon!!! The original owner must have been worried about people robbing parts off the engine because he had the hood chained down. I'm glad he did.

It has been setting for 30 years under that lean too. It is rusty but not beyond repair. It is my wife's new ride. The thing is pretty loaded up and it even has a 402. There's a good chance the engine is locked up from setting plus it sounds like it had a bad noise in the engine and that is why it was parked all those years ago. I was going to leave it alone and put a different big block in it but I just can't do that. I'm almost certain it is getting a 12 valve cummins and a 47rh trans. I have the stuff to do it and it will make it such a nice rig to drive. The originality bothers me to change it but then again, driving a big block across country on vacations isn't going to be cheap. More to come on all that.

Currently it is setting on Leon's trailer and I need to go get it. I have been so busy lately I haven't had time to get over there. I'm hoping to get over there and get it with in the next week and wash it off to see how it looks. The wife is wanting to paint it sea foam green. I really like that color so we're going to do it.

Re: New to us 72 Suburban

The west coast mirrors are going to go and below eye lines will go back on. She wants to loose the lower molding but I'm trying to talk her into keeping that on there. So far I'm not winning that battle.

Another thing going away will be the wheels. I don't mind them but they're just not her style. The crazy thing is these are Carroll Shelby wheels. I didn't even know he made wheels for anything other than Fords!

I already bought a very, very nice tach/vac 80lb oil pressure cluster from Leon for it. I have a new CPP tilt to put in it. It's going to need a lot of patch panels. I have a crazy idea to add a tool box to the LH side. I'm working on securing another tool box set up at the moment.

Re: New to us 72 Suburban

I loved this Burban the first time Leon posted it. Now I've got my ringside seat.
I believe those wheels were worth the price of admission.
And as the owner of a 503 green Suburban I approve of the color choice. This is already getting good.

After I figured out what the wheels were I figured they will be worth something decent or nothing at all.

She approved finding a roof rack and lowering it but hasn't decided on wheels. I plan to do a spring drop not air ride. I also don't plan on slamming it. My Camaro is almost too low and is a PITA to drive in and out of some approaches or cross speed bumps etc. I want this thing to be worry free.

Cool project cant wait for the build to start and see what you end up doing with this one.

Saw the wheels and liked the style right off the bat would have to find a retro 70's style project to put those under thinking Manx dune buggy

I was going to buy it too but it went to the owners nephew. I'm surprised no one in the family wanted the burb. Good for us though.

Re: New to us 72 Suburban

Last weekend we went to Leon's house and brought the suburban home. The Deracho washed the drinker's side and Leon washed the captain's side to get all the barn find dust off of it. It's always a good day when you get to visit the LockDoc ranch.

Re: New to us 72 Suburban

I've been working a plan with the wife to try and get a budget of what it is going to take to get this road worthy by next spring. I don't believe she is ready to see the stuff all added up. This morning I put a battery charger on the cables to see if I could get the engine to turn over. The charger trick didn't work. Although, I did find out the blower motors work for the AC, wipers, lights, all work and the starter did try to crank. The 402 is stuck so I am going to dump some witch craft down it's throat and see if it can be broke free. I even removed the fan and shroud to get in on the crank bolt with a large ratchet and it still didn't help. Go figure. This could be why the burb was parked 30 years ago. We knew it had a noise in the engine and maybe the noise turned into no turny turny.

It may be that one of the other parts is stuck too, like the A/C compressor.
