Kilroy - a fun loving ratty build

OK, bought a 1969 C-30 flat bed 350v8 4 speed. After driving "yes DRIVING" it home over 60 miles home it didn't take long to know it must have the lowest gears offered in the rear end. After stopping for gas and water (it was spewing out the radiator from riding 65 down the highway) it did great as long as I stayed on the business route below 55 mph. Upon initial inspection the mechanicals are great but the cab is a basket case. My brother is on board with me in making something unique out of it. I want something fun to take to the car shows which at least makes people stop and say "whaattt". I don't want anything perfect, just kinda a figment of my insane imagination!. Let's start at the beginning with the pics upon getting it home then we can go from there.

Re: Kilroy - a fun loving ratty build

Ok, first thing to go was the rotten wood flatbed. It looks pretty mean without the bed!

Re: Kilroy - a fun loving ratty build

Current direction with ole Kilroy!

Established a goal of having it ready for "Run 2 the sun" car show in Myrtle Beach on March 16th, 2017. Will I have everything done by then? Hell no! not enough time! I do have some goals and it will run & drive and be presentable or I will take my 71 instead (not a bad back up plan).

Kilroy - Late 60's/early 70's nostalgia build with Rat/Hot Rod influence.

Suspension:
Rear end swap to later model "wide" 14 bolt dually rear with friendlier rear gear ratios. Flip kit of rear axle with 2" lowering blocks to get that fat rear down 8", also removing leafs to aid in drop. Custom coil over shocks, helper air bags and old school slapper bars for nostalgia.
Front end: Disc brake conversion w/ 2 1/2" drop spindles and 3" drop springs with a coil cut off of those to get slight rake on front or Air bags? drop shocks.
Wheels and tires: 20" x 7.5 KMC machete front dually offset wheels w/ 245-45-20 street tires, 20" x 12" single wheel TIS 538 (matching design deep lip) wheels with 315-35-20 street tires. Finish is black outer lip with satin gray or gold wheel face.
Interior: Beige paint on metal, tan seat and dash pad, charcoal gray door panels, gauge cluster & glove box, shotgun shifter handle with rat rod type accessories thru out. Wood floor board.
Body: patch & bodywork, scuff and paint exterior Charcoal Gray Metallic Hot Rod Flatz & Hot Rod Flatz Gold scallops. Custom front push bar and all trim & grill Murdered out Satin Black. Bed is 1968 stepside long bed box with the fenders removed, don't think I will run any rear fenders but we will see how it goes. blacked out lenses and a few surprises along the way. Custom wood bed floor raised inside bed, beer keg style gas tank, custom satin black headache rack & possible stainless steel rear wing??
Mechanical: 383 sbc, double hump heads with 280 cam. Gilmer belt alternator belt and brackets, vintage Eldenbrock finned black valve covers, vintage tunnel ram with 4" extensions and scuffed up to look old and stick thru the hood with dual 450 holley's and twin shotgun air cleaner in scuffed black finish. Petronix distributer with yellow spark plug wires and headmen full length headers. 700 r 4 overdrive transmission with 2200 stall converter.
Rough Sketch attached.

Re: Kilroy - a fun loving ratty build

In for the ride here, this is going to be sweet, I was just offered a 70 c30 for 500.00 complete May look into it. Are you using a single wider tire on the back like they have started using on the semi trucks ?

Re: Kilroy - a fun loving ratty build

Thanks and yes, super single in the back although it is only a 20" x 12" wheel in the rear. I have really had a hard time choosing wheels and tires for this rig. Most people are going with the super single semi wheels, either 22.5 x 14 with the large 405 semi tires using wheel adapters to fit a 8 bolt or buying custom rims from a few places. I wanted something that was different and did not break the bank. I plan on getting these on order this week.

Re: Kilroy - a fun loving ratty build

Stripped the interior this weekend, made some crude floor pan patches, sprayed all the interior metal in almond, dash pad and seat are camel tan color and door panels, cluster and glove box are charcoal to match the exterior. Started putting everything back in last night but ran out of time. Started some minor bodywork on the exterior. My front disc brake upgrade plus lowering spindles should be here mid week, and hopefully the flip kit for the back will be here Friday so we can get this thing rolling again...and low! Brought my field find step side bed over to my brothers shop, its going to need some, no a lot of work! Picture attached. I will try to get some interior pics soon!

Re: Kilroy - a fun loving ratty build

update on work...after some back and forth with delivery lead times I made a 73 up kit work for my rear end. of course between using an 1982 model 14 bolt dually rear from a friend, a 73-87 flip kit installed on a 69 dually narrow rear axle frame nothing lined up or was especially easy due to the leaf spring mounting pad was in different locations. We made it work, now if i could get the correct front disc brakes for my dually sent to me instead of a standard C30 I could finish my suspension! Got the interior painted, just need to finish the floor and add my accessories. Started some body work also. Going to wait until I get the front suspension slammed to know if I am going 2" lower with the back? It's going to be low as the back is already 7" drop and the front should be around 6 1/2"-7" drop.

Re: Kilroy - a fun loving ratty build

That's a long list for "run to the sun". It's in like 3 weeks? Pretty cool looking truck as is.

Quite a few members of the Upstate GM truck club will be there. I can only go on Saturday, so I'm waiting to make sure it's going to be a nice sunny day.

Re: Kilroy - a fun loving ratty build

67CHEVYRED, yes it is. I was on track with no time to spare! However, the suspension parts I needed that were not correct has doomed my completion date. Already knew i wouldn't have my engine or drive train done but I was hoping to have most of it done as far as suspension, interior and exterior. Oh well, life is full of disappointment. If I can get it together enough I might bring it anyway, one thing is for sure I am going to the show! Already booked the room and can't wait to see everything! C you guys there I hope!

Re: Kilroy - a fun loving ratty build

Stardate 8/2017: after much shenanigans with my suspension vendor (them advertising a drop spindle & disc brake conversion for my 69 C-30 dually) I have used what they gave me and then modified my suspension in order to mock up my ride height. Went down 7" drop in front & 8.5" in rear (modified flip kit) static drop. I still have a long way to go as the rotors on the front will not clear the valve stems in front with the 16" rims but the 20's I am installing should fix that. Just goes to show just cause it's advertised doesn't mean it fits...alas, that's why it's called custom! Anyway, I am still waiting on a few parts before I get back on it because we have started a restoration on my brothers 65 C-10 stake bed. I might slip some pics in on that project also. Anyway, wanted to slip in a picture of the build as to date.
