Re: 1967 Chevy Shortbed Build Up in Progress

Here is what we started with. A 1967 Chevy shortbed from Kentucky. 3 on the tree with a 6 cylinder. This truck had 58K orginal miles believe it or not. It belonged to a farmer.

Re: 1967 Chevy Shortbed Build Up in Progress

We took the cab and bed off of the frame. We then sandblasted it and completely disassembled it. I bought a kit from LMC with the springs, tie rod ends, ball joints, and etc and put on it. The rest came from my local Bumper to Bumper auto parts store. We applied 2 coats of primer and 3 coats of chassis black on it.

Re: 1967 Chevy Shortbed Build Up in Progress

Here is the power plant I decided to go with. It is a 1974 454 bored 30 over. It has a set of 375 horse heads on it with a 5.10 lift cam. It should move the truck down the road. My plan is to pull my car trailer to car shows with this truck with my 1969 Chevelle on it.

Re: 1967 Chevy Shortbed Build Up in Progress

I picked up a 71 long bed frame and used the disc brakes, power steering, and rear end and put on the 67 frame. I used a 700R4 tranny that came out of my son's blazer after he rolled it. My buddy changed the tail shaft so it would work in the 2 whell drive pickup. It has a corvette servo and heavy clutches so hopefully it will hold up behind the big block. I also bought some ceramic coated headers from Summit and put on it. We had to massage the frame for the motor mounts and headers. But with the help of you guys on the board we got it done with no problem. I took the frame up to my buddy on the trailer and had him install part of the exhaust so we could start it. I installed flowmasters on the truck. I also picked up a complete set of stainless steel brake lines from The Right Stuff and put on it. They are not on in the pics below. Here are some pics of the frame with the motor and tranny installed.

Re: 1967 Chevy Shortbed Build Up in Progress

The cab was in pretty bad shape. My brother in law and myself decide to try and do the work our selves. I bought a new mig welder ( good excuse to buy a new toy) and die grinder wheels and away we go. Man it was scarey at first. I purchased approximately $325 worth of sheet metal. I also bought a partial cab. The rails on the cab were rusted. Also the main support in the back was in bad shape. We used the parts off the other cab to fix it. It was also an AC cab so we will put the firewall on my truck. Here are some of the pics below. Scarey at first. But in the end the doors fit better after the repair than before. Not to bad for 2 amateurs.

Re: 1967 Chevy Shortbed Build Up in Progress

I will post some pics of the cab we are working on now. Hopefully we will have all the sheet metal work done on it this week. Future plans will be installing a 1991 stepside bed on the truck. I am also going to try and make a tilt front end for the truck. I want to be able to raise it with hydraulics rams from inside the truck.

Re: 1967 Chevy Shortbed Build Up in Progress

Here are pics of the floor after we got it done. We used POR-15 on it. Now we have to fit the firewall and cut the AC firewall out and install in my truck. Man this is a lot of work. All of the supports were rotted. And the floor in the back was gone. We used sheet metal from an 87 Monte Carlo hood I had in the shed to replace the floor in the back at the cab corners. I am sure glad they make all the replacement parts for the floor. But they need to reproduce the pieces for the floor in the rear.

Re: 1967 Chevy Shortbed Build Up in Progress

Here are some additional pics of the cab. We cut the gas tank brackets out and put in 1/4 plates for the cab mounting. I am going to use the bucket seats and brackets from an 86 blazer. We welded all the holes shut that weren't going to be used. I mounted the seats and put plates on the bottom side. I then welded the plates and nuts to the floor. As you can see in the picture it makes it look like stock. I am going to attempt to mount a saddle tank from a 1991 stepside pickup on this truck. I am hoping it will work.

Re: 1967 Chevy Shortbed Build Up in Progress

Here are the pics of the firewall after we put the donor AC in the truck. All of the welding is not done yet. I put the old one up on the firewall to show the old one I cut out. I also welded up the hole for the fuse box and clutch rod. I am going to use an after market wiring harness so the hole will not be used.

Re: 1967 Chevy Shortbed Build Up in Progress

I picked up some big block frame mounts for this truck. However we did not have the lower mounts and I was not about to pay the high price they want for them. So we used some thick rubber and 1/4 inch plate and made our own. I am including some pics of the mounts we made.

Re: 1967 Chevy Shortbed Build Up in Progress

The motor in the truck is a 454 bored 30 over with a 510 lift cam. Also has 9.5 to 1 pistons. The motor in the Chevelle is a 454 bored 30. It has 10 to 1 pistons with a 588 lift cam and a 3000 stall converter in the 400 turbo.

700R4 is beefed up with heavy duty clutches and a corvette servo. It was in my son's Blazer until he rolled it. My buddy changed the shaft in it so we could use it in a 2 wheel driver truck.
