Fake SPID on eBay truck?

I have seen a few SPIDs on eBay that I thought were fake, but at first look, I thought this one looked real. It just looks like an old SPID. I am still learning about this hobby, but this one seems to have very obvious errors. The VIN on the SPID has a 3 where the "B" should be. The sequential production number of the VIN is off by one from the door plate. Other errors I saw are the model number, the "red velour interior" and the 117" wheelbase. I am planning to contact the listing company today but I posted here first to see what the experts thought.
My main question is does a fake/incorrect SPID matter from a title or registration perspective? I am thinking it does not because the vehicle is registered based on the VIN plate or the frame VIN. Here is the link:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Chevrolet-C-...US_Cars_Trucks

Here is the SPID in questions:

Re: Fake SPID on eBay truck?

Lower case font? Wrong font? I see so many problems... There's no DMV issues but I hate to see people taken for a ride. It has the base model parking brake pedal, a repop tailgate, and so many flagrant discrepancies that too an uneducated buyer might not be apparent and they're passing it off as a low mileage truck.

What's more important, a sticker or the condition of the truck?

A straight and clean truck is what it's all about. Stuff like that makes me cringe though, if they're trying to pass it off as something it's not what's to say they're not trying to pass filler as metal? It obviously has some repop metal on it which we all know doesn't fit great. Yes, if it's a rust free truck I'd overlook a few anomolies like that but I would go over it with a fine tooth comb to make sure I'm getting what I think I was.

Very nice truck though, but I would question the serial plate on the door sill. not correct rivets...

Looks like a resto mod. Pics show 2 different seats. Hood ornament?! Not in 71. Steering wheel. The red velour seat isn't even installed.. and they are claiming that is the ORIGINAL seat??

The sticker says everything I need to know about the integrity of the seller. He has none and if you trust him you are a fool. The serial plate on the door sill looks like it has been changed. What would you do if you bought the truck and when you went to register it in your home state it comes up "stolen"? Or, there's half a ton of bondo over newspaper covering severely rusted panels? The seller will be long into the wind with your money. That's why the truck is on e-bay in the first place. Much easier to hide. Much easier to cheat because for every knowledgeable buyer there are ten suckers.

Re: Fake SPID on eBay truck?

The sticker says nothing...the truck will speak for itself. I don't believe anything a seller ever says. Look at the truck in person an decide for yourself what it is you are buying.

Re: Fake SPID on eBay truck?

My 2 cents only: There is zero wrong with modifying the truck as he or she has - including the SPID. What IS wrong (here comes my 2 cents..) is when a seller does this and then tries to claim it as an original (and as I read the ad's description, the seller doesn't seem to be trying to make the case that this is a rare Cheyenne super custom camper swb, as if that could exist anyway). Clearly this thing isn't even remotely original. That's ok - but as buyers we need to be educated as to what we are buying. We're lucky to have this site to be able to be informed. But there are plenty of Joes out there that will buy this thing, for a high price, thinking it is something it is not - because "A" seller, somewhere along the line (i.e. maybe not this one) mis-represented it with the intent to fool someone - MAYBE. MAYBE this was done three owners ago, and when that guy sold it, he was up front about the originality - then as it's passed hands, uninformed buyers/sellers just don't know and pass it along. If THIS seller were misrepresenting it as a special truck and trying to make an extra buck, well, that would be wrong in my book. But, it's the world we live in and "buyer beware" trumps "trust a seller" every day of the week. If you like the truck, and you like the price, who cares how it's represented? Nobody should. If this truck's reserve is $20K because the seller wants someone to think it is a real 117" wb (eye roll) special camper (2nd eye roll) Cheyenne super (3rd eye roll)... then he's going to have a hard time selling it until a sucker comes along. If his reserve is much lower, say, a price for a truck that has clearly been modified, isn't original, and is in very good condition, then if the seller is aware of all the little weird things, nobody gets hurt and this is all fine. It's all about what it's worth to you - and all that matters is that you get what you THINK you are paying for. In this case, if you're aware of all the boogers associated with this truck's originality and don't care, and get it for a decent price - congrats! You should be happy and we should be happy for you. What shouldn't happen is that you buy this truck for a given price and then find out it's not what was advertised. That would be a shame. This seller has kinda set the buyer up for that situation (either knowingly or unknowingly) in this case (again, my 2 cents), by showing the SPID - and, luckily, perhaps nobody on here would buy this without first seeing the truth of the situation. If they still buy while they are aware, then I'd be happy for them because they like it as is - not because it's a 117" wb Cheyenne super custom camper. Nothin wrong with that. Bottom line - I have to agree with ledzepp - I never trust a buyer. Not so much because they are all crooks (we're all sellers too), but because many are sometimes simply uninformed and we all think the world of our trucks when it comes time to sell. So, buyer beware, and all is well. Nothing wrong with this truck, but I don't like it if the seller is trying to deceive. It seems this might be the case - based on the production of the SPID (and who knows, it probably wasn't even this guy that put the SPID on there...), not necessarily because of the vehicle description in text. I'd be willing to bet this guy doesn't even know what's been done to this truck, probably just a trade in or something. It is a dealer, after all, not an individual.

Re: Fake SPID on eBay truck?

There's no telling what was the actual options on that truck from the factory. The seller should just tear the sticker off and throw it away. You'll be better off not knowing what the options are so there won't be a thread like this... should you put your truck up for sale.

Re: Fake SPID on eBay truck?

I made mine to show what is on my truck. I see nothing wrong with it. I shows what it is when I built it. It's my truck and I can do whatever I want to it, including making my own SPID.

Re: Fake SPID on eBay truck?

Here at Casa de Magwa, we figured out a long time ago that our integrity was worth more than money.

But, I believe that changing a SPID around to reflect changes I've is not an inherently BAD thing. There's a SIPD in my glove box that proves that.

And, if the worst thing I can consider would happen...That is, RAT gets sold to someone outside the family? He/she gets a SPID that was on the back
of one of the compilation truck's glove box doors, the one now on the glove box door, and about 900 pictures showing the build, including about fifty
shots of the straight stock shortie frame that lives under the build.

Of course, the real question is whether someone plays with SPIDs to try to fool someone. Unfortunately, we live in the real world where $$$ generally
trumps morality. But that's a big topic right there!!!!

This "thing" was posted up on the Blazer SPID thread http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s....php?p=6908535 (starts down at #135) just over a week ago as a result of a Dallas area CL ad. http://dallas.craigslist.org/ndf/cto/4711446777.html

Re: Fake SPID on eBay truck?

I like the idea of making a custom SPID for your custom truck, makes it even more custom and thats cool.

But if you make a custom SPID and say its original to boost your profit, thats no so cool.
