What psi do you run?

What psi do you run in your tires on-road. We run 5lbs less than max in the BFG A/T's on the Suburban. Thats what I do on all my vehicles, better mileage and tire wear.

Re: What psi do you run?

I use a tread depth gauge to help determine correct pressure, and I rotate regularly to even out the wear. My K20 gets 30# unless I'm cutting firewood, then the fronts go to at least 35# and the rears get 50#. The Tacoma gets 32# all around.

The right pressure varies with vehicle weight, how it's driven, size & type of tire, and probably a few other factors...

Re: What psi do you run?

I was told to use sidewalk chalk on a flat parking lot... Cover a large patch on each tire, then drive 50 feet or so and see if it all wears off or not. Also good way to check toe alignment...

Re: What psi do you run?

^ The chalk method is a good start, but only for straight-line driving. If you do a fair amount of cornering, you'll need more pressure to avoid excessive wear on the outer edges, especially on the fronts. That's why I use a tread depth gauge -- it will find differences that are too small to otherwise notice.

Re: What psi do you run?

My Co-op bias plys are kept at 40psi front and back on road and I usually drop them to about 20psi off the road.

Re: What psi do you run?

My tires are 80 psi max. IIRC, the rears are at 70, fronts are 45-50. 70 in the front was too harsh a ride without the plow on.

Treadwear still looks good, but I don't think I've put 3000 mi on it yet.

less pressure than max will give you less mpg because it causes more rolling resistance because of more tire on the flat surface of the ground. but at only 5lbs less it wont cause the tires to wear any less but it doesnt help either. just my $.02

Re: What psi do you run?

Determining proper tire pressure is kinda tricky. Alot of things come into play when figuring what is proper presssure like tire size, side wall ply and rating, wheel width, front/rear weight of vehicle, load carried, etc even time of year. Ultimately your tire and vehicle will tell you what's needed, ya just need to read and listen to it.
