Door lock

New member! My son and I just purchased a 72' from a guy who did a great restoration. However, we don't have a door key. What would be the best route to go about getting a key. Im sure we could put new locks in or take one out and take it to a lock smith. Is there a master set or something we could buy to figure it out that way?

Re: Door lock

The door key should be the same as the ignition key if nobody hasn't changed it. I took a door lock out many years ago and carried it to a Chevy dealership and had a key made but I'm not sure if they can still do that on a vehicle this old.

The first thing I would do is to put the nozzle of a penetrating oil can (something with Teflon in it works best) into the door lock cylinder key hole and give them a good spray. Then, if the key will fit into the lock, slide the key in and out a few times to loosen up the tumblers and try turning them. (don't force them) If the key doesn't slide into the lock I would say that the ignition cylinder has probably been changed at some point in time. As Garyd1961 said, originally all of the locks would have been keyed the same. If that doesn't help, roll the window all the way down and with a good light you should be able to see the back of the door lock and the latch mechanism down inside the door. Spray all of that with the penetrating oil and lock & unlock it with the interior lock button a few times, then try the key again.

If none of that works take the passengers side door lock out and see if there is a code number stamped into it. (see picture below) If there is, a locksmith should be able to cut a key from the code number. If there isn't, he should be able to disassemble it and make a key for it.

Re: Door lock

Hmmm, all older GM vehicles I ever had used a square headed key for ignition and a round headed key for the door locks. Not sure I follow this same key for door lock and ignition logic . . . maybe I'm missing something. In any case, I'd probably just put new door locks on.

Re: Door lock

All of these trucks came with one key. Well, actually 2 keys, but they were the same.

Re: Door lock

If LockDoc's great advice doesn't get the door locked.
You probably don't have the correct key.
You could go replace Doors locks with something like in the links below.
These kits are keyed alike.
You could replace the doors and possibly changed the ignition out later.

or this set includes glove box lock keyed the same.

The two key system started in 1973 for trucks. All '67-'72 trucks used the same key for doors and ignition....

Re: Door lock

Or better yet, if you don't get your key to work, order a matching set of ignition/doors from LockDoc. I ordered a set from him. Reasonably priced and fast service from a Board Member.

Ditto! Ask if he has some on hand. He shipped them quickly. If I am not mistaken, they were OEM.
