1971 Custom 10 (The Red Menace)

Finally getting something done on the big rust bucket so I thought I'd start a thread. The twins arrived in July so this will be a limited resources long term project. Here's pix of how it looked when I found it, and how it looked until recently:

Re: 1971 Custom 10 (The Red Menace)

Here are some shots from this past weekend's (Nov 2010) bed swap. The original bed was far too rusty and will become a trailer. the new bed is rust free, but does have some minor issues. I will have to fill the holes in each side that were there for the saddle tank necks, and since this bed is from a '68 (you can see it in the background) it has reflectors instead of side marker lights. I'll have to wire those up, but that's no big deal. The frame has fairly heavy surface rust, but is solid. I will try and clean it up and paint it at a later date. Not sure when I'll be getting around to the cab's rust issues, but it's on the list! In case you are wondering, the rest of the '68 (not owned by me) will be going on a short bed frame and will become a step side.

Kids always put a damper on things. They're so inconsiderate.

No doubt about it!

Here's the after shot with the '68 bed. The amount of rust in my truck just got cut down by more than half overnight!

Re: 1971 Custom 10 (The Red Menace)

Picked up a different tailgate. My truck's original gate is rusted out at the inside bottom. The new gate is solid but has a lot of surface rust. It used to be a Blazer gate but the PO welded up the holes on the inside. I'm having my local shop weld up the trim holes on the outside since my truck doesn't have trim. Right now this gate doesn't look like much of an improvement, but I got it cheap and after an acid dip, it'll be rust free! I almost forgot to take before pictures! I was about to drive away from the shop when I remembered. I jumped out and grabbed a couple shots with my phone. I made them bigger in Photoshop so they are a little blurry. Should have it back from the shop in about a week and will post the after pictures then.

Sorry, haven't got the gate back yet, but I did manage to make the pictures a little better. Should have the gate back any day now.

Re: 1971 Custom 10 (The Red Menace)

That's better!!! Just need to work on one or two rough spots and primer it and it'll be ready to go on the truck!
