Just Bought A 79 K5

Well I just bought this, actually about 2 weeks ago. Wanted to post up some pics and see what you guys think? Should be driving it this week, which i'm pretty excited about.

Re: Just Bought A 79 K5

One more of the beat fender.
I already have another front clip, doors and tailgate for it.

I have also stripped and powdercoated the wheels black and put some 33s that I got from a friend on it since buying it. Not the best tires but they are all the same size and should get until I can buy some new ones.
I am still undecided on going ahead and doing a 2wd swap.

Driver, that's why I am thinking of doing the 2wd conversion. I've got some audio stuff that I bought for my 03 silverado I am thinkin of putting in it once I get the body work done.

Re: Just Bought A 79 K5

Well I got it inspected yesterday (out of state title) and got my tag transferred over from my old suburban. Drove it around a little lastnight and today. Now that I got that taken care of, I can start workin on it as money will allow me to do. I already have a few things for it so I will post my progress once I get to work.

Re: Just Bought A 79 K5

I drove around a bit more today, and then I discovered that I am missing the front spring eye bolt on the left rear leaf spring. Does anyone know what size and length of bolt I need to replace it?

Re: Just Bought A 79 K5

I plan to cut the good area out of a donor cab and replace it, hopefully this winter. I need to replace the windsheild as well anyway, so while its out may as well cut and weld.

Re: Just Bought A 79 K5

My dad and I spent part of saturday and sunday swapping the radiator and installing the upper support so it would be held in by something other that zip ties and bits of wire. We also replaced the broken lower alternator bracket and ditched the crappy aftermarket chrome upper bracket in favor of a stock piece. Next to go will be the chrome air cleaner also in favor of a stock piece, and then the chrome trans dipstick and tube once again for a stock piece once I come across one.

I'm sure glad i've got extra parts sitting around

My dad also bought a 1980 RC dually on sunday, so maybe i'll be able to drag home some more spare parts. LOL!

Re: Just Bought A 79 K5

I was putting some gas in it and noticed some dripping under the fuel filler area. Looked under there and sure enough the rubber hose has dried and cracked just after it attaches to the metal tube. Looks like i'll be swapping that out tomorrow.

Re: Just Bought A 79 K5

Nope, noticed it was leaking and stop pumping at around $8. As little as I drive it right now I don't have to put much in it.

I got the filler hose replaced lastnight and went and put $20 in it today, sure is nice not seeing any gas hit the ground.

Re: Just Bought A 79 K5

Just a thought- if the filler hose has dried out, the rubber fuel lines at the top of the tank are probably in the same condition. You may want to drop the tank and check it out.

Re: Just Bought A 79 K5

Everything appeared ok while we were under it lasnight, but i'll probably replace all the other rubber lines this summer anyway.

Re: Just Bought A 79 K5

The only reason I mention this is that the lines in my '73 had pretty much turned to dust when I got it. Pretty much the same fuel smell, just couldn't fill it all the way up.

Re: Just Bought A 79 K5

I finally got to go get the Blazer body that I bought for parts yesterday. The tailgate wasn't in as good of shape as I had thought but the window does roll up and down so I will be getting those parts swapped over to mine soon so that I can actually open my tailgate. I also got an added bonus with the body, the low back bucket seats were still in it. The console was gone but I didn't expect the seats to be there, the drivers side track needs a little work and so does the passengers latch and they both need to be recovered. They were recovered once, but they covered the factory vinyl when they did them. I will get some pics up soon.
