diff cross pin bolt ?
I,m just re installing the carrier on a 1980 12 bolt open diff and have the cross pin in and installing a new bolt, the little one with 5/16 head. My question is the bolt tightens so far by hand and then gets tight but still some threads left,is this normal. Is the bolt sorta like self locking ? It gets tighter when I use a wrench but I don,t want to go to far encase something is wrong

Re: diff cross pin bolt ?
I had a rearend that the last 1/4 inch of the pin broke of not allowing me to remove the spider gear shaft. Check if your hole for pin has anything in it. If a small piece is in the hole it could stop pin from going in It should screw in all the way without stopping.

Re: diff cross pin bolt ?
Thanks I cleaned it out with a small wire brush as suggested and might have been some old loc tite, went in pretty good, but what do you expect, is a old truck. Just didn,t want to snap that bolt at the last of my rebuild. We,ll see on a test drive if my rebuild works. Thanks for the help as usual.
