Re: gm create motor ?

A question I would ask is, is there a warranty if the engine is not installed in a '96-'02 truck or van and if it is not installed by an authorized shop?

Re: gm create motor ?

When you decide let me know, I am debating the same thing.

Thought about putting on a 2 piece cam cover. Running it for a year and when the warranty was out doing the cam swap.

Re: gm create motor ?

Look at the timing cover when you get it. Seems to me it needed a plug in the bottom and I machined one.

I removed the reluctor on mine (I'm using HEI) and replaced the timing set with a Cloyes double roller. I finished it off with a stamped metal timing cover, just like any other SBC.

Re: gm create motor ?

I'm running the factory cam in mine with a Holley carb and headers. I don't see any need for a cam swap, it has plenty of get up and go.

Hot Rod Magazine dyno tested one and came up with 320 HP and 398 ft-lbs of torque:

Did you also change the balancer to an earlier one since you removed the reluctor wheel?

Put the same headers and 750cfm carb on a 350HO and they get 377hp
http://www.hotrod.com/articles/350-h...ckage-install/
That's a 50hp boost with the non-roller cam.

I really liked that article. If I weren't building my retro 1970 LT-1, I'd be following their guidance, but with the valve guide mods and a higher lift cam right away.

That's good but you can get 300 hp and 375 ft-lbs of torque with the factory cam.
Another thing you can do is to swap out the intake rockers for 1.6 rockers and that will boost the hp.

Re: gm create motor ?

I just finished an L31 5.7 vortec swap. Crate from jegs. Have about 75 miles on it so far. It will roast the tires(which I'm trying not to do until its mnore broken in). Put a 600 cfm summit carb and some cheap long tubes also from jegs. Kept the factory cam. It has plenty of power. Before you do a cam swap try it out. The power is great and has plenty of low end grunt. Only gripe is a slight weeping from where the timing cover meets the oil pan. Hopefully the seals are going to swell a bit and that will stop. Not a leak or anything to worry about at this point. Also for the crank sensor hole on the bottom of the timing cover I used a .075 inch freeze plug. Tapped it in and threw some jb weld over it for good measure. Youre going to love this engine. A huge upgrade from any tired junkyard or original plus roller stuff to boot so no need for special zinc additive or oils. Good luck!

PS are they changing the format of this website? Keep having issues with it and it looks different.

Re: gm create motor ?

There is a timimg pointer molded into timing cover. There's a mark on balancer. I painted the mark white and when at Tdc it lines up with the pointer. That's 0 Tdc. I installed a msd timing tape with 0 on the tape on the balancer mark. Works great. I got a serpentine system from 98 junkyard vortec motor. You can see the mark and pointer just fine. Paid 100 for the serpentine system with the alternator. Bought a new water pump. If you need any help at all just ask. This forum has been a wealth of knowledge and help to me and if like to pay it forward. Good luck! Only thing I'll add is the alternator moved to the other side of the engine bay but it's not a big deal to run wires and there's some great electrical guys on here.

I have been looking at this and I plan on pulling the oil pan and installing a one piece gasket. I know a couple of people that swear by them. I am seriously thinking about replacing the replacing the timing cover with a 2 piece cover. I am looking at the Edelbrock and it comes with a timing marker.

Re: gm create motor ?

There's an engine masters on youtube where they take the lowest GM crate 350 put vortec heads, a cam and intake on it and make power. Sounds similar other than you already have vortecs. Here's a link.

Re: gm create motor ?

I'd put the cam in it and run it. It's a NEW SBC, what could go wrong??

Not to throw a wet blanket on this, but I recently acquired a truck with an LS2 with a ... CARB on it.
I love SBCs but I'm not going back. The LS motor makes so much more power, it's just glorious.

And you can do it for the same money... Just a thought!

Re: gm create motor ?

Wow how did I not see this thread?
Ordered mine from Ebay on 5/4/18.
Delivery is scheduled for Monday.

The only things I've ordered so far:
Motor 12530283
Flywheel SCA FP-350L-SFI
Intake Edelbrock 2116 (I'm running a Quadrajet)

My plan is:
cam/spring swap and replace the timing cover
Stock exhausts - If I have to replace I'll upgrade to Corvette manifolds
Perimeter bolt valve covers
Of course a fuel pump.

FYI: I've read that you don't have to change the balancer, just use the existing reluctor to make a spacer. I will let you guys know what I find out.
Also note: You need to change the gear on your HEI's. Hardened/machined steel Gears are available. You need to measure your shaft diameter to select the correct gear.
