I have purposely gotten rid of all my CDL trucks because of the endless paperwork and requirements (fees) to be able to use them. I may even give up my CDL license this time around because now in the great state of MD they have decided that instead of showing my current DOT Physical card only when I renew my license I now have to send them a copy within 30 days of getting my 2 yr checkup or they automatically revoke my license. Its not one thing that makes it bad, its all the little things they come up with that make you throw your hands up and say Sc*** it.

One of the many reasons I am glad I don't live in MD any longer. I worked for a Federal Agency based in VA back there where they required us to have a CDLA from our home state to drive the vehicles in our group. The Virginia residence drivers could self certify and not have to do the CDL medical as they were Federal LE drivers. In MD, they couldn't give a crap if you were Federal LE or not. This year I was near the end of my Med cert expiration date, went to the Dr for a physical, and low and behold there was a newly required blood test that needed to be performed. The Dr gave me a 30 day extension which I promply faxed AND emailed to DMV before the expiration date. The blood work came back fine, a new cert was issued and I promptly faxed and Emailed the new paperwork to DMV. Guess what....They ignored the extension...CANCELED my license and all while I was on the road moving to San Diego. Took 1.5 hours on the phone with some very grumpy people for them to pull my records (emails and faxes) and admit their mistake. I required them to send me an official email (which they did) so I can present that to CA DMV when I transfer my DL here and also to have in case my insurance company does something screwy to my rates.
I have had a spotless driving record for 29 years now and all it took was MD DMV incompetence to screw that up.

I do not have to drive big trucks any longer so I am going back to the regular drivers license....not worth the hassle or the expense!

In Ohio, antique trucks are considered similar to cars, no stopping at scales, no inspections, no CDL required. There's no GVW on the form for antique plates and doesn't care if brakes are air, hydraulic or straight mechanical. . There were a few test cases 15 -20 years ago, but by now the highway patrol has learned the law. Good for lifetime, no renewal required.

Missouri is the same way. All you have to do is send the title off and you get your plates in the mail. In Missouri, you can also find an old plate that matches the year of your vehicle and, as long as the number isn't already in use, you can register it to that plate. You just go into the DMV with the plate and they will register it for life for a one time fee of $25. No CDL, GVW, inspection or anything. You can only drive it 1000 miles per year though. It's funny though, pages in the log books seem to vanish into thin air...baffles me.

I have a fleet of trucks, including tractor/trailers and straights with air. If you are "not for hire" meaning you are not being paid to haul (non commercial), you are a private citizen just like an owner of a class A RV. No special license required to my knowledge to drive a Cummings powered, air brake, diesel pusher weighing 42,000 fully loaded towing a Jeep Liberty. Seems stupid to not have a CDL, but it is not a commercial vehicle.
