Oil bath air filters

Can someone tell me if oil bath air filters are any good? Are they effective and are they recommended? Thanks

Re: Oil bath air filters

That depends. In very dusty environments the oil bath filter will perform better. For most applications a paper filter is going to be a better choice.

Re: Oil bath air filters

I tried them years ago. Yeah, they let more air through with less restriction.

But.... It's too easy to a) let them go dry between cleaning/re-oiling and b) put way too much oil in them. Now you have an oil leak from your air filter housing and potentially a problem with surface coating oily residue on and inside of anything between your air filter and your throttle body/carb ( Think MAF, IAT, MAP and other expensive parts that monitor air flow, volume, temperature, pressure, etc. ).

It's also kind of a pain to have to remove, clean, dry and re-oil the darn things.

So, I use paper these days!

Re: Oil bath air filters

I'm not sure if they make a air filter for my 68 w/o it being oil bath. I think there's an offset on it.

Re: Oil bath air filters

If you want to keep the stock look and haven't done any mods then hang on to it even if you do change to paper filter as mentioned above. The paper filters are just more convenient to use even if you have to buy a housing for it.

My 68 GMC has a 250 six and it had an oil bath filter. I removed it and replaced it with a paper filter but didn't hang on to the old oil one. Wish I had just for nostalgia. Also, the housings for the single throat carb looks anemic.

Sorry. Sometimes, I just need to remember exactly where I am.

Re: Oil bath air filters

I can get one for $40. Is it worth it? Can I put a paper filter in it instead of oil?

Re: Oil bath air filters

Recently I've looked at quite a few oil bath filters...mostly for v8s....i dont think there is a paper filter that will "fit" a oil bath breather without some modifications...and oil bath filters tend to be on the small side diameter wise....ive seen a few larger ones in my searching....im still contemplating getting one and "making" it work....

And what about the good old K&N technology, is it a thing of the past?
