Exclamation TH350 to 700R4 swap question (4x4)

I put this in the engine and drivetrain thread but wanted to put it here too just in case. I've finally pulled the trigger on getting this swap done. I have a shop I know doing the work and the only question I have at this point is what others have done regarding the shifter extension/relocation.

The shop I'm using has a few ideas on what they will do to extend the shifter to the original location but I wanted to see what others have done. He is considering heating the shifter rod and reforming it to make it work among some other things. Let me know what you guys have done/think so I can pass them along to him.

The 4wd shifter? I did this swap on my truck but the shifter stayed in the factory spot.

I moved the engine forward and left the trans case in the factory position, that way there is no need for custom made driveshafts or shifters, but i guess if you just removed the trans than altering the shifter is the way to go.

When I install the 700R4 in my Jimmy, The transfer case will stay in the same spot. Just moving the engine forward. This will also give me more clearance for the HEI.

Same here, moved forward, had the output shaft shortened, no expensive spcer to buy.......check splines on output after the cut but all was well on mine.

Thanks for all the feedback guys. If anyone did anything different, keep it coming. I'll let him know what everyone has said and make a determination from there.

Re: TH350 to 700R4 swap question (4x4)

Only on that other K5 forum do guys leave the engine in the OE position and move the transfer case back.

I'll be doing the swap soon and I think moving the engine forward is preferred. The transmission linkage will need some work and the exhaust lengthened. I've hear that the front driveshaft comes very close to the transmission pan if there is no lift in the spings.

The front driveshaft wont fit at all if you put a deep pan on the 700r4. I learned that the hardway.

Re: TH350 to 700R4 swap question (4x4)

Well overall I'm pretty pumped. I found out today they were out test driving my truck with the new transmission installed. End result is we're going to modify the shifter. I'm fine with that as long as all of the work is done right and works as intended. I've known the shop it's at for years and trust them to get the job done well. This was the last major piece I wanted in terms of how the truck ran. The TH350 was working fine for the most part but the seals were so shot, I had a huge puddle of fluid under the truck. Truck has been driving great and now I can enjoy highway speeds and with slightly better mileage to boot. Hoping to get it back tomorrow but worst case early next week.

Re: TH350 to 700R4 swap question (4x4)

See my build thread in my signature below - I just did this swap as part of a restoration of a 72 K20 truck. Move the engine forward, get the right linkage, get the output adapter for the NP205, trim the 4wd fan shroud as needed, can trim the upper metal rad tube but may not be necessary, if you have a tilt column (OEM) repro shift lenses are available for the 700r4 that list an "O" for overdrive. BTW- the owner of Bowtie Overdrives where I got my tranny previously owned a K20 and is knowledgeable about what you need for a smooth swap. Good luck, Pete

I've read several other places about moving the engine forward. Is that done with difference engine mounts or how? Thanks Dave
