Re: Do you have a 1972 Plaid Pickup?

Not sure how I missed this thread over time. I've owned a Dark Olive Highlander Package C (tilt wheel, A/C) for about 10 years. The plaid seat sections are long gone except for a sample swatch that I got from SMS - the original scrolled vinyl remains in nice shape. It's a super clean Texas/Oklahoma truck with a 1967 283/4 barrel with a little bit of cam, and the white paint and woodgrain trim were added before I bought it.

I only use it about 100-150 miles a year, and will probably reluctantly sell it this spring since I bought its big brother in October and I have a chance to buy a friend's beautiful '72 4 speed Stingray roadster that I've coveted for about 17 years. I've tried to keep them all, but I have to start getting selective....

Terry

Holy frijoles! Look at that SWEET old Titan! Nice Highlander too vette442, you can get a replacement seat, with the scroll work etc from Tim (member Truckseats) if you're interested. I know it's not a highlander, but if you happen to have any more pics of the semi, I'd love to see em....

Re: Do you have a 1972 Plaid Pickup?

Those are both nice looking trucks. You said your vinyl is in good shape. Mine was too but the plaid was bare threads. I bought the plaid from SMS and had it sewn into the original vinyl by a local upholstery guy.

Thanks for the seat cover tip (you too, Ed F.). I heard years ago that some suppliers weren't getting the scroll right, but I'll look into both options. SMS cloth was going to be my plan.

If nobody minds, I'll indulge Jocko with a few pics of the '79 Astro/95. 175k original miles, was inside a Detroit warehouse from 1984 to 2013. Didn't run at that time and was sold to a scrapper, but was rescued and revived by a classic truck dealer in Lisbon, OH. Prior owner was a Yellow Freight service manager, so it's completely roadworthy. I'm no diesel mechanic or driver, just a guy who has wanted a rig from the 1970s since the 1970s, so this type of truck is perfect for me.

That Astro 95 is too cool...back in the good old days when GM handled everything up to the big trucks.

Re: Do you have a 1972 Plaid Pickup?

Found this on Craigslist the other day. I ask the guy to send me a picture of under the seat cover and it confirmed my suspicions. This is now my second highlander. I posted my other one on here about 2 years ago.

Re: Do you have a 1972 Plaid Pickup?

Here is one on EBay. Put the correct the seat cover back in it and it will be a nice one. I realize there are some other changes, but appears to be an original paint truck.

Re: Do you have a 1972 Plaid Pickup?

I think mine qualifies for this thread...

Well here is my 72. It was my grandpas and he bought new in 1973. Other than an after market radio (luckily no cut dash) and speakers in the doors it is a clean original. I have the block on a stand in the shop and motor in it was a fresh rebuild. It was repainted once. I am working up the final additions to the motor and doing fluids etc. After that it will be time to start body.

Also a few other gems for this.... An old unused can of 30 weight, a vintage spotlight, The original owners manual and emission control booklet. The original loan paperwork signed by grandparents. A 1976 visitors pass to ZION national park and a 1976 map of Zion Park.... Etc.

Very cool stuff.
Look up threads on buffing that old paint out.
That looks to be a very solid truck with little rust.

You will save a bunch of money, and people will be coming up to you everyday asking about it.

I'm glad you got it AND are keeping it👍👍👍

The truck has jut a little rust on the inner and outer rockers and a little rust on the cab corners. I need to get them done for sure. In the bed it has 2 spots of rust and just a little bit by the storage box.

Re: Do you have a 1972 Plaid Pickup?

Here is one for sale in British Columbia. I emailed the seller asking what engine was in the truck considering he states in his ad that the Big Block has been removed. He emailed back saying there is no motor in the truck so the truck is probably not for me. He is correct especially at his asking price. Sorry no spid but I'm very sure this truck is a highlander.

Posted to EBay today. A Non Package truck with A/C like my Highlander. Seat, like many Highlanders, has been recovered at some time.

Its interesting to see that on a loaded up Package truck they opted for a 350, HD rear springs and even a chromed rear bumper but they didn't get gauges too! sometimes its hard to remember they were optional on anything but a Cheyenne Super.
