Re: 68 Build Thread**Better Late Than Never**

Man life just never stops... no matter how much you would like it too...
Son started High school this year and is in Band.... I have a new schedule at work &between us barley having enough time for "normal" life stuff, the truck just sits.
We did get the truck back together and drive-able since the last photo update, so let me at-least gather up what photos I have up to the current status and catch everyone up...

But I have to say.... 2 major factors are at play right now...
1. Son and I not having alot of time to work on the truck together, and without the enjoyment of working with him it just feels like work.....
2. Bought a 2011 Camaro LS3 SS that has re-directed my pocket book at the moment....

Not sure that I realized how I felt about this whole thing until just now... after having to type all this out... Truly letting time slip by for no good reason...

Let me gather up all the info/photos and put together the time line...

Scott

How well do you like the 3.73 posi and new 4 speed automatic? What's the difference getting rid of those 3.08 gears?

We like to hot rod the truck around at times, and we also just cruise on down the highway at "modern" speeds 70+... so I have to say this combo truly made this possible.
I mean, we get best of both worlds... stop light to stop light, bat out of hell wheel spin fun.... and a wonderful highway cruise RPM... Its amazing on how different the truck has been to drive with each change we have made over the years. At times so rewarding... and others so painful.
The 2004r & 3.08 days where bad, the RPM was so damn low at highway speed the truck would sometimes shutter just to keep going at 65-70mph.
Around town, god forbid I leave it in OD and let it shift into 4th and lock up... the pour girl was like a bucking bronco.
Needless to say we didn't drive it much during those days.... Alot of valve body & governor work was done during that time to "try" and help...
But in the end it was decided that the 2004R & 3.08 gears where not the ideal thing to have if we where going to stick with our mild 327 engine.

Live and learn, but as my son has said to me many times... " Dad.. I wouldn't have it any other way..."

So history on the truck...
Installed and started engine Sept 2009 ODO-81299 (327/TH400/3.08)
Installed new 2004R Transmission March 2012 - ODO-84348 (327/2004R/3.08)
Rebuilt rearend Sept 2012 ODO-84675 (327/2004R/3.73)
Current setup DEC. 2013 ODO- 86855 (327/2004R/3.73)

So we haven't put "A LOT" of miles on her over the years.. But i can say, without any doubt that the best miles have been the 2004R & 3.73 miles...
Time spent driving her in Stock form TH400 & 3.08 was fun.. We calk it up to the "farm truck years"
Time spent driving her with 2004R & 3.08 was truly painful... WE didn't enjoy her much, driving was more of a worry than an enjoyment.
Time spent driving her with 2004R & 3.73 has and is just awesome! ... Cant express enough our thoughts about how this combo truly brings to life our "vision" for this truck...

The overdrive and 3.73 combo is perfect for what we are looking for, it allows us to have our fun & also allows us to cruise down the highway without worry.

hope my rambling on helped answer the question...
I can go into more real life examples if need be... But I truly would much rather forget about the 3.08 days and not re-live them if possible...

Cheers!
Scott

Re: 68 Build Thread**Better Late Than Never**

Cool! My 67 has a 327/th350/3.08 non posi. And it just doesn't really have any got up and go at all unless I'm at 45-50 then it can get up and go so I'm hoping when I put in the 3.73posi combo it will be much better!

Re: 68 Build Thread**Better Late Than Never**

UPDATE :08-20-2018
Picked up a new heart for our family ride.
2001 LQ4 6.0l. 112k Miles. $800. Found it on Dave oil market place right around the corner from me. Bought it was to good to be true, but once I went to see it in person. I knew I had to find the $800. Opertunities don't always come knocking at your door. But when they do you must recognize hem for what they are an opertunitiy.
