2000 gmc oil filter

my work truck sat most of the winter picked it up drove about 30 miles lost oil presure could not pull over for about a mile had oil on the ground turns out the oil filter came loose never had this before it did not want to turn over what to do before trying to start again

I have never heard of an oil filter coming loose unless it was never tightened to begin with.

But onto your issue. Clean up and closely inspect the oil filter threads. Make sure they were not stirpped with the last filter change.

Drain whatever is left of the oil and examine it closely for metal particales. Fill the oil, and startit. I would run it. and check for oil consumption. Check your oil pressure and see if it seems to burn oil (exhaust smakoe). I'd run it for a short while, drain the oil, check it for particales, then put on a new filter and oil again and give it a go.

I punch a hole in m,y oil pan (well an armadillo did) and it took a while to get my car slowed down and the engine shut down before I noticed the real damage. The car ran another 2-3 years on that engine with no real side effects. A lot depends on the current conditon of the engine before the oil was lost.

You want to be careful. In 2000, a 5.3 and a 5.7 use a different filter. Make sure you have the right one on it. According to Baldwin Filters' site, if the VIN has a "R" (5.7), it uses a B1428 (2wd) or a B35-S (4wd). If it is a 5.3 with a "T", it uses a B1432. I hope I'm wrong...
