My Poor Ol Caddy

Sitting out in the barn waiting for the day that will never come. Someone knocked off the cardboard I had covering the ol girl.

Well Mark, if that day will never come under your stewardship.... what do ya think about letting someone else have a crack at it? The old gal deserves more than just sitting in the barn until the end of time. Looks like an awfully good start of a project!

Re: My Poor Ol Caddy

Yeah Im thinking about rolling it out, cleaning it up real good and putting it out by the road with a for sale sign in it. Its out at the old family farm and the road gets a ton of sunny day traffic. Classics to sports cars out in droves. I have to get the ok from the family first.

It has a Caddy 500 with matching 400 trans and rear out of the same Caddy. Also has a early 70s Nova clip. Was a silly trade I made to get it ... but you know hindsight lol!

Re: My Poor Ol Caddy

That's a car to list in the right place, not set out by the road. Especially when it's not out in front of where you live. Sounds like a killer project. Something someone could get real excited about. Old car projects of that age are harder to come by these days.

Its a well traveled road and it will sit between my honeys cousins house and her nephews. Albeit it is a ways apart haha. I got the OK today. Ive listed it before and get nothing but flakes and total low ballers. When I go to sell anything it seems like that's all I get ... cool stuff or not.

I'd be careful where I parked that for sale. A guy not far from me put a really good condition Hudson or a Packard out front of his house. It picked up some dents and the windows were all busted out in a matter of days. Then we got a bunch of rain. Some people.

I would list it nationally and get the serious buyer. Contact one of those project buying shows

Man, you gotta get an attitude when you sell stuff! "This vehicle is the best thing since they started putting ti...uh maybe not that one...since they invented sliced bread!" You gotta be able to negotiate. I used to hate negotiating, and like you, sold stuff just to be rid of it. I learned from my FiL. He bought a car for my MiL at a local Ford dealer and spent 5 hours waiting for them to come down to the price he offered. When we went to buy my wife's new car, we just sat there while they went through the credit stuff and came up with a price. Then, we brought out the hacksaws, chisels, files and other implements of destruction, and machined that price down to one we were willing to pay. We must have done a pretty good job, because they remembered us a year later when we went to buy my new car.

If someone starts to grind you, just tell them to have a nice day and walk back towards the house. You'd be amazed at how fast it can turn around. If not, the next person will pay you that price, or close to it. If you don't want to deal with it, have your wife do it. Not knocking you, but I can tell you that a woman can drive a seriously hard bargain. At least my wife can, when she goes to buy something without me. I don't worry about her spending too much on stuff, just for buying too much stuff!

Wasn't trying to turn this in to a for sale thread, was just musing.

But if "someone" were to ask I would take $3500.00 for it. Because of what I traded for I am actually in to it is so much more . Floors and trunk have rust, rest is pretty decent. Still a very long ways from being anywhere close to road ready.

When I put it up for sale before someone asked if I thought they could have it running in a weekend. I told them if that was the case I would have spent a weekend on it and sold it for a ton more lol.

Re: My Poor Ol Caddy

I'd double that. Don't undersell it. You are the guy with the really old hard to come by cool already started hard stuff done 2dr fat fender CADILLAC project and they don't. Look at what cars that are done are going for. $3,500 will have flippers crawling all over you...and they will be offering $2,500. You want the person from a couple thousand miles away who is willing to pay the price, with another $1,500+/- added for shipping, and another 20-40k ready to sink into it.

I also feel set out by the road will have everyone who likes the look of the car stopping. Not just the ones who are cool with a partial project. You'll get the ones who hope it's just pulled out survivor who will wish they never stopped when they see it has the new drivetrain. You'll get the people who think it will be $500, too. Plus, you re not there to engage them or to get down to it right then and there. It's your car, just offering my unsolicited input.

Smile Re: My Poor Ol Caddy

That is a pretty cool old Cadillac....nicer than most of the cars from the era and probably more collectable and sought after.
I agree with the guys....$3500 is too low in my opinion.
Is the motor free?...does it have a carb on it and simply has in run in years or would it run with an afternoon's worth of work?

Regardless, I would get that on a trailer and take it to the Monroe Swap meet in the fall....with a bit of pre-advertising mixed in.

Your car tho'...your call, very cool old caddy.

All good

Oh I know, and I wasn't trying to turn it into a sale thread either. I was curious why a Cadillac of that year and condition was hard to sell. If I wasn't attempting to be financially responsible right now, I'd buy it in a heartbeat and plan a nice long roadtrip. $3500 is CHEAP unless you're one of the highly annoying craigslist flippers. I blame TV shows for that stuff.

Maybe you can find an antique Caddy owner forum and list it on there. At least you would know it is going to an actual Caddy fan and not just a flipper.

Re: My Poor Ol Caddy

$3500 may be too expensive if no one will pay it. I love listening to people say "one just like it went for Blah, Blah Blah at such n such auction" Well the one at the auction costs the owner $100,000.00 to build correctly! And are we willing to do that to get a car that will sell for $60,000.00??? Doubtful.
It cost lots and lots of wampum to get a car built correctly even if you do it yourself. That chrome alone is 10's of thousands of dollars. And what you spent on paint when you were in high school is no where near what it costs now days.

Re: My Poor Ol Caddy

Well there ya go. You did a super nice job on that truck Dennis. I never would have got it done like you did. You were a much better steward than I was. Btw I was trying to call you the other day and the line was continually busy.

And Rocknrod I don't have Barrett Jackson fever. I have a minimum price I want for it, and its hardly over the top. I am very well aware what the costs would be to bring to A-1 condition. Ill be "that guy" the one that gets talked about on whatever forum...Yeah I offered him what was a fair price for me, but he said he would let the barn fall on it before he took my offer. That's selfish of him not to sell his personal property to me at the price Ive decided works for me me me.

Re: My Poor Ol Caddy

The fact is, $3,500 is not much to pay for an old car project to start with. That is now the $300 car we used to buy in high school. People get all excited about a dime a dozen 67-72 GM truck project and here is a true classic fat fender Cadillac in a more desired body style for a rodder... with the drivetrain already swapped. The car doesn't have much chrome, mostly stainless except grille, emblems, and handles. Depending on the level of restoration, it may all be pretty good. I could have a cool and fun cruiser for $20k or less if I bought it.

Re: My Poor Ol Caddy

It’s worth what someone is willing to pay for it. For this car, I have no idea if that is $300 or $3000 or $30000. Have you tried to sell it yet, with a price tag on it? If not, it’s just dreaming and guessing...and that’s fine if you aren’t really interested in selling it. I have a highly optioned project K2500 for sale at $3000 and have not had one offer yet and over 500 people have viewed the ad. I think classic cars in general have gone down in value from what I’ve experienced and seen at swap meets. Maybe people have finally grown a brain and realized that a project non running vehicle is just that...a $500 project unless it’s some Uber rare ultra desirable model.

I'm not personally in the market but I'd sure like to see some pics, a link to the ad, something, anything!
