Do I need floor pans?
I was going to do a full floor pan on my 68 but the back seat looks ok with just a little rust that I'm sanding. The front two sides have some rust to it. What do you all think? I don't believe I'll need a full pan. Would patching it with metal work? Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated as I have not done this before.

Yes you do. As you start cutting away the rusty parts you'll find that metal solid enough to weld to is farther away than you first thought...

You'll spend more time with a lot of aggravation trying to patch it up. Believe me.
Full floor, while more expensive makes up for it in a faster and better repair.

How much do you think it would cost if I paid someone to do this for me? I would buy the pans and pay someone to cut and weld.

My body guy who does the welding gets $35 hr and he does the work as needed and then bills. There is no real way to price it before the project starts as there is to many unknowns.

My 2 cents. Cut out only what it takes to get back to good solid metal. New panels don't always fit the best and I've found out that taking a new patch panel and just cutting out what I need works better for me. This picture shows some homemade pieces I made from scratch .Both sides driver/passenger was pretty rusty at the seams. Paying someone would have been$$$.

This is a tough one, if the cab support braces look like the floor then you may be better off with full floor. But, if you are not doing this yourself you are at the mercy of the repair person to get all the gaps and alignment correct. I've done 2 of these rust buckets and have patched in the aftermarket pieces. Not a lot of fun but feels good when done. My current project is:

Looks good Lanman. My concern is that I'm not sure how to level the front and get the weight off of it. I "think" that is what is supposed to be done before replacing the pans.
Can someone lead me to a video where this is shown? I've look all over the net and can't find anything. Also, this is like a suburban. So I can't take off the cab, I'm going have to install without taking the body off. Thanks! |

I've found the floor pans. Also found a body shop in town that says he can do it but can't get to it until the end of the month

I'm going to pass on the body shop doing it. Says it will be a minimum of $2000. I'll probably try and do it myself.

The top is all pitted like that because of water coming in the cab and getting soaked up by carpet or padding or what ever they put there back then. The underside is rock solid. If his cab supports are like mine they're not physically fastened to the floor pans....
