A short-term exhaust fix - but will it work?

Just chopped my longbed down to a shortbed, which required cutting my existing exhaust.

I plan to bend an entire new exhaust system, but in the meantime I used a plumbing coupler and some red RTV to create a short-term fix:


It just needs to work for a few test runs and a drive down to the muffler shop. I'll let you know how it goes.

That will work as a temporary solution

They do make band clamps to use as a permanent repair. They are cheap too.

This is what i get through my supplier. Walker makes a band clamp too.

Sure, looks fine for a couple runs. I also recently converted mine but I have to wait a while before I can afford to do exhaust. I ended up using one of those couplers posted above. It’s been several months and so far so good.

Let’s hope it holds. Did you use any red RTV to seal the deal? That was a last minute option I threw in but am unsure if it’ll work

Nope, no RTV. The clamp I used was a pretty tight fit made for joining exhaust pipe in this way. I figured it didn't need any sealant. Besides, I have a few holes in my exhaust anyway so I wasn't too worried about another leak! Despite that, it is not leaking but I really do need new exhaust. I'm only using this temporarily until I get to it.

Band clamps are awesome. We used them in the engine lab. You could stand right next to them with no leaks whatsoever when tightened. But you kind of use them only once because they take a set. Unless your tubes are the same size then you might get away with reusing them several times. Of course under the truck you could probably get away with more. Better than anything else, though.
