Well, I've almost got my cross member modification done!! Just need to paint the parts and install them on the truck. Here are a few pics. Click on the link below for the whole story!

(Oh, by the way, right now there is just a block of wood under the bag to hold it up. I still need to make a lower cup to correct the angle of the lower bag plate......... but you get the idea)

Slammed- how do you mount the bag to the top mount. The top mount is welded in place right? Besides that nice work. Nice welds too. Keep of the good work. Hopefully buying my plasma cutter today then I can show you my crossmember build up.

There are two bolts that attach the bag plate to the cross member. However, they aren't shown in any of the pictures.

The bag is attached to this plate as shown, and then that plate bolts to the cross member.

Ok it all makes sense now. So you have to drill new holes in the the side of frame to mount the crossmember ?

Yeah, just on the sides though since I only moved the upper brackets forward.

What determined how much material was cut off of the cross member?

Well, actually I just kinda guessed! I figured I might as well take out as much as I could because I could always add height to the bottom cup if I needed to. Cutting out any more than I did wouldn't have left much metal and would have probably made it too weak. My goal wasn't to get the overall drop lower, but rather to get the ride height lower. I wanted the tops of the tires to be about even with the top of the fender opening at ride height. I should be able to easily achieve that with this mod.

I'll definately post some more pics with it installed on the truck.

Well, I got the cross member bolted in the truck today (6/1/03). I just had to drill new holes in the side of the frame to line up with the new upper a-arm bracket locations. I noticed one possible clearance problem with one of my new plates and the steering linkage, but I think a little grinding will fix that. I'm gonna try to get the a-arms and spindles intalled tomorrow evening and then I'll post some more pics!

Okay, I got the front end put back together temporarily.

The result????? Hell yeah!!!!! I just made a subtle change, but I think it looks soooooo much better! I haven't driven it yet, just reassembled it to make sure everything fit. There are no shims in the front end in these pics, so there is a lot of negative camber. Also, it almost looks like the wheels are just slightly ahead of center. But I think a couple shims in the upper a-arm will fix that. I haven't seen any interference problems. The steering shaft is a gnat’s ass away from the upper a-arm when the bags are dumped like in the second two pics. However, I plan on limiting the "lowness" so I can still drive the truck (slowly) when the bags are dumped, so that shouldn't be an issue.

I did it with the engine in. I just lifted it up about a 1/4" by puting a (padded) floor jack under the oil pan.

Well since you laid out all the ground work, it makes it easier for us.

My only worry would be the a-arms. Do you think they will stand up to daily driving here in cali? You know all the pot hole filled roads and what not around here.

Well, if they hold up to Kansas City roads, they'll hold up anywhere! K.C. roads SUCK!

That is my only concern also. I'm not worried about the top ones, but the lower arms are gonna make me nervous until I get some miles on them. The welds turned out good, so I don't see why they'd give me any grief. I'm gonna inspect them after my first few test drives to see how they hold up.
