'99 Tahoe Barn Doors

Have a bit of a irritating problem with our '99 Tahoe, as the passenger side barn door has a tendency to close too easily on it's own. When trying to load anything in a breeze or slight bump and it swings shut. I'm thinking the friction pads or similar parts are worn or out of adjustment. Anyone have a fix for this they want to share?

Like the barn doors, wish GM had never done away with them, think '06 was the last year for them?

Re: '99 Tahoe Barn Doors

I have a 99 Suburban and was having a similar problem. If I recall, I was able to flare apart a metal strap that functioned as the door stop.

Re: '99 Tahoe Barn Doors

Thanks for the reply. Can you elaborate or explain just what you did to keep the door from closing so easily in even the slightest breeze or when parked at a slight angle. Gets a little bit annoying when trying to load heavy objects in the back.

Like my cargo doors, wish GM had not done away with them. Same goes for the flat floor and the seats folding down for a flat cargo area. Newer Tahoes and Suburbans all have lost cargo space because seats no longer fold to allow a flat floor. Sometimes change just for the sake of change is NOT ALWAYS a good thing.

Re: '99 Tahoe Barn Doors

Love barn doors too! Sadly, I’m selling my 99 (upgraded to a 2019 Suburban).

Here’s a photo that shows the metal strap that limits door swing. Inside the door the strap makes a U-bend. The mouth of the bend has widened to the point it doesn’t grip the post inside the door. If you partially close the door beyond the mouth of the U the strap can be pushed sideways to where it disconnects from the door. Swing door aside once strap is loose then take pliers and crimp the U a bit to narrow the mouth. Once done replace the strap inside the door at the post. it should have enough bite to hold the door open.

Re: '99 Tahoe Barn Doors

Tried that and that didn't go well at all. When I removed the strap from the door I found a crack in the loop portion. Fatigue from 20 years of wear I would guess results in not enough tension to hold the door? Any idea what that strap is called for a replacement part? "Cargo door tension strap" or similar? Did not find any bolts to remove for replacing that strap. There is a spring type clip arrangement at the body side end of the strap with a down pin. Maybe remove the spring, slide the pin out and replace that way. Not sure about that.

UPDATE: Did a Google search and found a U-Tube video for changing the "cargo door check strap" . Looked to be pretty straight forward and found the straps on Evilbay for $24.95 a pair shipped. Will order them tomorrow.

Re: '99 Tahoe Barn Doors

A newly swapped strap should keep it open. Let me know how it shakes out.

Re: '99 Tahoe Barn Doors

Posted an UPDATE to my previous thread but found a U-Tube video showing how to change out the check straps. Seems pretty simple enough. Ordered a pair of check strap earlier today. Will post back when I get them or at least the broken one changed out. Left side door still works fine, may wait and change that one when weather is nicer.

Re: '99 Tahoe Barn Doors

Ordered the door checks on line and got them Saturday. Just changed the one a bit ago that was broke. Passenger side which gets the most use. Pretty easy fix, maybe 15 minutes total, part of that being gathering up tools. Used 6'' straight screw driver, pair of pliers and an inspection mirror.

Propped the door open and removed a cir-clip at the bottom of the pin. Tapped the pivot bolt out and removed the broken door check. Swapped the tension spring from broken door check to the new one along with the nylon bushing insert. Positioned the door check in place and then tapped the pivot bolt in place. Replaced the cir-clip and opened the door all the way, closing it and letting the door check catch the door pivot rod. My door stays open again !!
