'60 C10 rear axle off center

While looking at my restored chassis, which is ready for the body to go on, I noticed the rear axle was off center. I measured it and found it to be 3/4 of an inch to the left, driver's side. You can even see the rear drive shaft is not in line with the front shaft.

The tracking arm is what determines the position of the axle, correct? It is the original tracking arm. I did not notice it when I took it all apart.

Any ideas for correcting it? If I center it with a longer arm, would that make the wheels not be straight? Or, maybe they are not straight now. I'd like to fix it before I put the body on it and finish it.

At ride height with all the weight on it, the chassis will lower and it will move to the right. In theory.
Assuming your chassis is straight/Square, trailing arm cross-member is square etc. Are you sure the track-bar is original to the frame and rear end?

The rear drive line is supposed to be off center. It's to keep the u-joint bearings rotating in the cap so they wear evenly.

Re: '60 C10 rear axle off center

Once you get everything back on the truck, the load combined with the length of the tracking bar will push the axle back towards the passenger side. But the axle pinion will most likely still be offset from center as it was designed that way. What you want is the wheels to be the same distance side to side. But there will always be some side to side movement as you drive over bumps, or loaded and unloaded.
The longer the tracking bar, the less side to side movement. If after you get everything together and your ride height set, and then you see an obvious side to side difference, then you could buy an adjustable tracking bar.

Re: '60 C10 rear axle off center

Thanks for the feedback everyone. Good to know. As far as I know, it is the original tracking arm. There is nothing to indicate it is not.

I haven't moved the chassis since dropping the engine in. After I get the body on and move it around a bit, we'll see how it looks. Before I started this project, my Dad followed behind me when I was driving home one day and said the truck tracked perfectly straight.

Thanks again.
