Steering wheel puller and gizmo for removing the turn signal switch?

71 Chevy C-10, no tilt.

Anyone recommend a steering wheel puller? More than that, I saw on Youtube where a guy used a tool on his 70s car, which appeared to compress something so he could pull the clips out for removing the turn signal switch. Anyone know what that is and if it's necessary?

Thank you

You can buy a harmonic balancer puller at most parts stores or Chinese tool stores. They work real good on pulling steering wheels. The tool for holding the plate down while you remove the snap ring only applies to 73 up trucks & 68 up cars that have the key in the column.

Re: Steering wheel puller and gizmo for removing the turn signal switch?

Now there was a Kent -Moore tool that was needed for pulling the upper shrouds to install the turn signal switch but that may have been on tilt only columns. I used a fine pick and ran it around the groove at the bottom and did so about 20 times or so and it got out the grime then loosened it up ever so slightly then I was able to pull upwards on it with gentle pressure and pop it loose. loosen the steering wheel nut place your knees under the wheel and left hand on top of the steering wheel with even pressure ,using a brass hammer smack the steering loosened wheel nut and the wheel will pop off in your hands . you just saved $45.00 on a wheel puller .

Grumpy knows how to do it! I bought a steering wheel puller years ago but couldn't find it the next time I needed to pull my wheel. The knees under the wheel trick works like a charm. One small lick on the bolt with your knees applying just a bit of pressure from the back of the wheel and off she comes. Just back the nut off to the top of the bolt enough protect the threads of the steering bolt and give her a small whack with with a hammer. Your knees applying a bit of pressure towards you at the same time you whack the nut/bolt will drive the wheel off of the splined bolt with ease.

Hey that's the same one I have, works like a champ. You see those all the time at swap meets for a few bucks.

Gumpy been around awhile. Let me see If I understand this (never done before).

1. Remove the three screws.

2. Loosen center nut to the end of the thread. I Imagine the very end of the bolt should be exposed, for #4.

3. Knees behind underneath, hand on top with a little more pressure on top (another way of saying even pressure all around).

4. Strike the bolt as hard as you can with a brass hammer BANG!. Just kidding, one sure strike, not too much behind it.

Re: Steering wheel puller and gizmo for removing the turn signal switch?

I've removed 100's of wheels of of 50's -60's and 70's cars and trucks like this and it's always worked for me . you back the wheel nut off far enough to protect the threads on the column shaft when you whack the the nut .you don't want any damage to those threads .

The compression tool you saw is not necessary in these trucks. It's only needed for the later models with locking steering wheels.

Re: Steering wheel puller and gizmo for removing the turn signal switch?

I read this thread last night, to get psyched out for replacing the turn signal switch. I tried what Grumpy recommended, but didn't work. So I used the picture of the puller, and made my own, which did the trick! I also took pictures of each step for my own use, because this is the first time I've done this, to reassemble correctly. I even thought of putting lithium grease around the shift lever and collar would be a good idea, wow, that was a 100% improvement!
Great resource this forum is!
