engine codes

I have a 64 stepside that has had the engine replaced. The engine suffix code is TDA which applies to a 72 307 or an 80 350. How can I find out which it is? The engine vin# doesn't collaborate with anything I have found online either. It starts with C8S. All info I have found on engine vins start with a number(1 for Chevy), plus the second number(8) is supposed to be the year of the engine. I could use some help guys. Thanks.

Re: engine codes

Best way that I know to id a V-8 is with the casting numbers. Go to www.mortec.com for that. I know the stamped numbers can be used, but I don't have the data.
