I have had my truck since November 2014. I have been battling an oil leak. I've replaced several gaskets that I knew weren't working. However within the last week, I was reading a thread here about power steering.

Someone mentioned that the old Chevy power steering pumps ran too much pressure for the T-bird racks. This same person said Speedway sold a pressure reducer. I had replaced the rack when I got the truck. The boots were all cracked and there was fluid all over the place. I didn't really think about it being overpressurized. Anyway, I bought the reducer and installed it today. The old one I pulled out was not a reducer. I'm hoping this will stop the leak.

The pressure reducer is intended to get away from the twitchy (for a lack of a better term) sensation with that rack using the Chevy pump.

It was my understanding that certain T bird racks were compatible with the Chevy pump though.

the speedway reducer may fix your oil leaks in the rack too, unless the o-rings are to far gone
while my main problem was twitchy steering the rack was leaking until i installed the reducer

I'm hoping for that Ogre, the oil leak. But, yes the steering was a little twitchy too.

This may be a little off-topic, but will a GM type II PS pump work with a TBird rack?

Yes, it appears you can. I Googled that power steering pump and just went to the first site that popped up. They low pressure valve for the type II pump, http://www.tuffstuffperformance.com/...od/prd9697.htm

Yes but you still need to use a reducer on any ford rack.

Is there a performance difference between a GM type II PS pump with a reducer vs a Borgeson pump set up for Ford??

The Speedway restrictor is great! I had no idea how twitchy the steering was. I cannot do one finger u-turns, but that's ok! I wish I had known about this sooner. Also, the front of the engine seems to be dry, so far, so maybe that was the leak I had been chasing as well. Fingers crossed.

I'm currently in the process of restoring my 1955.1 Chevy 4400. My question is about power steering. I'd love to put power steering in the truck but not sure what fits and what doesn't. I'm obviously new to this. I've gotten some parts from classic parts and old Chevy trucks and the people on the phones aren't too sure if the parts that they typically sell (for smaller trucks 3100,3600 etc) will fit my truck. It's a 1.5 ton. Thanks for any help. I need to know exactly what to buy to make the conversion. Thx again.

My ongoing truck projects: 48 Chev 3100 that will run a 292 Six. 71 GMC 2500 that is getting a Cad 500 transplant. 77 C 30 dualie, 454, 4 speed with a 10 foot flatbed and hoist. It does the heavy work and hauls the projects around.
