Do you happen to have any info on your fuel pump and return setup? That sounds better than the external setup I'm dreaming up right now.

Thanks

Not the original poster but I am about the do the same L31 engine swap.

I looked seriously at the LS and the only way you can do it for the same money is with a used LS motor. The L31 is brand new, not a rebuild and it has a warranty. With a used LS there is no warranty if you have a bad one.

Plus there is a lot more work involved swapping in the LS. So it is not as cut and dry as it sounds. For me I figured I am going to get 80% as much for 25% of the work.

It is NOT. Too much lift for the stock vortec heads.

REALLY if you're looking for "drop in" cam. I'd recommend running the one that comes in your motor. A drop in cam won't improve your motor enough to "cost justify' IMO.

If you were willing to change your springs, keepers, and retainers you could run that cam you selected. Google "ghetto grind". These guys sell a complete kit (and it's reasonably priced)

BTW, mine has arrived! I just tucked it away until I get some parts.

Re: gm create motor ?

If anyone comes up with a way to run an in tank fuel pump please share!

Or if someone could share what fuel pump would fit through the tank bulkhead I'm open to making my own stuff. I'm going with a Carb so I don't need high volume or pressure.

Thanks

Re: gm create motor ?

I have the Boyd welding EFI tank in mine with the Aeromotive pump. I had EFI on this truck for a bit till it quit and went back to a carb. I used Aeromotives return style regulator for running a carb and it sits dead on 6psi all the time. I like the idea of having the return as it helps keep the fuel temp down and that reduces the chance of vapor lock.

On a 73-87 you just swap in a 87 model tank with TBI pump already inside. Not sure what your working with though. Could always swap an 87 blazer tank into the spare tire area of frame too.

As for the distributor gear, just go to GM and get the oem melonized gear from a late 90's vortec 5.7L. I ran a take out vortec in my old 79 with a 200-4R behind it. Put a normal timing cover on, removed reluctor wheel. RPM intake. Melonzied distributor gear. Adjustable vaccum advance [way too much ignition timing for vortec heads stock, they want about 34* max] and ramhorns 2" manifolds [2.5" wont clear 73-87's]. Super easy.

Re: gm create motor ?

Yes you can bolt up any small block long water pump.

Look here regarding the crank sensor.

Your going to need a timing tab too.. I am just going to swap the timing cover with an old chrome unit I have. It has a timing mark. You can buy bolt on timing tabs.

Also consider putting in a one piece oil pan gasket while it is out. People rave about those so I plan on replacing the factory gaskets with one and doing the timing cover all at one time.

Re: gm create motor ?

Those crate engines as well as the factory installed Vortec engines have a one piece pan gasket from the factory. In fact I think all 1 piece rear main seal engines have a one piece pan gasket from the factory.

Glad I found this thread! I was all ready to pull the trigger with Jegs who price matched the ebay price of 1848.99 but, not only does the linked engine have a $50 Visa card, but also a $100 discount came outa nowhere at checkout! Total is $1748.99. Sweet!

Re: gm create motor ?

I just purchased a GM turn key performance 350, going to install it into a 1971 blazer with a 700R4/NP205.

What is a create motor ?

A ‘create’ motor is similar to your ‘turkey’ performance 350!

Re: gm create motor ?

There is a formula!
It does involve some ‘metric’ calculations and a couple ‘french’ translations but otherwise easy to do.
Where is ‘X’ that it marks the spot and ‘Y’ do you live there?
