Underbed gas tanks...yes again

I need to order an underbed tank for my 63 project. Budget is definitely an issue. Who sells a decent kit for these trucks that's reasonable priced ? This is one thing I want to just buy new and be done with it, so junkyard shopping isn't the route I want to take. I'm on a tight time crunch with this truck.

That looks like a pretty sweet deal if it's for a complete kit. Hopefully the 14" depth isn't an issue.

Summit sells one a bit cheaper, but it's just the 16 gallon tank and requires a through the floor fill.

On Trucks TV they installed this one under the bed of their 1966 C10 project. Personally I'm not a big fan of plastic tanks than are suspended on straps.

Great kit with a few pointers. I just finished installing this kit on my 66. You will need to remove the spare tire mount,brace. Trim about 1/2"-3/4" of the bed support above the tank, and cut away about 1/2 of the bed mount for clearance of the filler neck. The stock blazer tanks had a bend in them this one points straight for the mount, or I suppose you could have a muffler shop bend some pipe and weld it. The tank has four holes in it with tabs that point upwards, these go into 4 holes that are already in the frame. The next brain twister is the straps, they come bent the wrong way for packaging. You will actually want to take the 90 the other way. I bolted one side of the straps through the frame and tank, and then drilled 2 holes for the hooks on the other side, then tightened the straps. The 30 ohm sending unit works great with my fuel gauge also. My wife just got all the pictures of this project off our camera so I need to get them and will be posting them soon.

Which of the linked kits are you talking about?

I like the Summit kit (for my '46) admittedly because it is smaller and more likely to fit in my narrower frame. I also like that its a fuel cell (plastic) so more rupture resistant and cannot rust like the galvanized tanks eventually will. It also has the GM/Universal sender mount that uses the 5 perimeter bolts instead of the locking ring like the Quanta and the ClassicParts one do.

I have a Ford tank (from SOME car, not sure which) between my frame rails now with no sending unit in it. But the gauges I got from Chev's of the 40's came with the GM/Universal type.

Also, does anyone know if the 0-90 ohm senders/5 bolts are standard to GM type senders and the 0-30 ohm senders are standard to the Ford/lock ring type senders, or am I oversimplifying?

Here`s what I`ve found, 1970 cougar tank 21 gallon will fit with trimming of the lower rails approx .75 inches on each side, rear cross member moved back and turned bacwards, shorter that the blazier tank by 4 inches, tank inlet either tru back of bed or under license plate.
1970 cuda tank 19.5 gallon no trimming required, the tank is tappered, 11 inches at the rear end, 6 inches at the rear of the truck, rear inlet same alternative as the couger tank, mopar tanks use a 240 ohmn gauge so either custom gauges or retro fit the stock gauge for 240 ohmn.

Thanks Slow Build. I knew there was some rhyme or reason to the senders. So the modern ones up to today are the 0-90 ohm ones.

The price for the tank you linked to is definately a good value. Again, as a couple guys already posted, the blazer tanks like the one you have selected will hang down low. It will be visible from the rear of the truck. That bothers a lot of guys that have installed them.

If that bothers you check out my build thread for data on a late 50's Chevy Passenger car tank install. It isn't visible from the rear of the truck if the truck has a bumper or a roll pan.

It's a personal preference thing. The first two pictures below are my truck with the Chevy passenger car tank. Second picture is a blazer style tank.

I like the idea of the Cuda tank. There used to be somebody on one of the boards who could/would retrofit the sending unit or gauge to make it work. Anybody recall who that is?

why not have one made? I understand the budget part but for others concerned about it hanging to low then board vendor Daveboyd makes some nice aluminum tanks for a decent price, in the low $300's (usually) and he'll customize it anyway you like.

OK, I found the link where he is offering these tanks.I am wondering if anybody has used one, and in particular, if his universal tank listed for 67-72 trucks fits the frame rails of a 66, where the fuel filler falls in a standard wood floor, etc? I would like to see it installed in a similar truck so I know for sure it fits.

The Classic Parts Kit, same kit from LMC, or Classis Industries as well as others. I got mine from Classic Industries cause I had a 20% off coupon.

I've got one from a 93 S10 blazer strapped under mine. For now. Motor came from blazer so it already had the 55lb fuel pump in it so I used it but it hangs down. (yes a little baby vortec 4.3) I've looked at every damn FI GM fuel tank on rockauto and don't see one that will fit. The spectra gives dimensions if you click on the "I" for info. That classicparts one looks real similar to the LMC one. I'm going to have to email them both and ask if the lock ring and/or hole in the tank is standard chevy. If so then I could get one and put a fuel injected pump and sending unit in it.

Here's what an S10 blazer tank looks like underneath. 19gal. You can just barely see the pumpkin underneath.

If I end up keeping this tank I'll extend the neck out through the bed and put a gas door on.


I'm keeping my eye out for a dirt cheap 98ish vortec 350 but in the meantime I got the S10 blazer for 200 bucks and scrapped the body for 300. Put the 4.3 w/tranny/wiring/puter etc in the 64 GMC to replace the tired old 80 something 250 six banger. It looks half way decent in there and gets good mileage plus the GMC had a V6 in it originally so the V6 emblems still work.

Can't wait to get it all together so I can tear it all apart and put it all together again. properly.

93 S10 blazer tank is 20 gal 33x22x10 1/2 and will not go between the frame rails
lmc is 21 gal 30x19x13

Same place as you got your tank lakeroadster. I like the fact that they have the option for FI pump. I'll probably be doing a 1" body lift on my truck since my tranny is about a 1/4" from the floor. That'll make a tank install with filler on top of the frame easier too.

Here's one that's on sale for 125 for 41-48 trucks but they don't give dimensions and it's not real clear where the filler comes out. Even comes with a 0-30 Ohm sender. http://www.tanksinc.com

To follow up on this thread, I appreciate everyone's suggestions. Ultimately, I decided to just refurb the stock tank and run it. It's the cheapest route and of all of these trucks I've owned over the years, having the tank there was never an issue with me.

Look for a tech post next week from me on gas tank restoration. I've done a few over the years that turned out extremely nice. I'm just waiting for a couple of things to be delivered next week before I do the post.
