Turn signal switch messed up in column... - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I've been putting this off, but its starting to really bug me. My turn signal switch's auto shut-off works great when I turn left, but not when I turn right. I've since fallen into the habit of shutting it manually, but I want it fixed.

I'm assuming its in the column right? Do you have to pull the steering wheel? Hopefully I don't have to pull the whole steering column...

What's the mechanism, and is it difficult to fix?

Most commonly one of the small return springs broke. There is one for the left and one for the right. They can be replaced fairly easily with removing the steering wheel. The dealer still carries these springs and cost next to nothing.

Cool. That'll be my project this week! Probably need a wheel puller though. How do you get the horn cap off?

The horn button just pulls off. You might want to check the turn signal cam that the springs go in. If it is brittle or cracked you can get one for around $13.00 at most parts stores. It is worth that if the wheel is already off

You can also get the springs at the parts store. Probably cheaper than the dealer. I got them at Autozone in the Help brand parts section.

in my experience, okay only 3 times, i've never had to use a wheel puller, just loosen up the nut that holds the wheel on a little bit and jerk the wheel back and forth and it usually will loosen itself up....matt

Hey 71BB i nealy ate the wheel doin it by jerking on it. i went out and bought a universal wheel puller and some extra bolts, because sometimes they don't fit all wheel.

You can rent a wheel puller at Autozone. All you have to do is put down a deposit, and you get 100% of your money back, unless you break it. I rent all kinds of stuff from them. I'm not endorsing Autozone, but sometimes they have what you need!
