Garage additions

I'm buying the property next to mine and getting rid of the old house on the property. Building a whole new garage is out of the question due to money constraints (bank told us to build the garage we want we would price ourselves out of our neighborhood) So I'm looking to add on to my double model A size garage adding 1 more stall that will fit my truck. Has anyone else done add-ons of this scale to their garage? Any pointers before I start this spring? Pictures of your additions would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Garage additions

If legal in your area, you could build a metal building... they can be disassembled and moved!

Re: Garage additions

the original plan was to build a 30x36 12 foot tall lol. I'll just save some money here and wait till we move to a new place in a few years. The addition shouldn't cost too much and i can just pay for it out of pocket.

Re: Garage additions

What if you built garage on that property with living quarters up top and rent out the living? Make the garage you have now your main shop and make the other one your storage garage. A guy in our town did something like this and basically doesn't cost him a thing.

Re: Garage additions

That site is awesome. I hope to update with some sketchup drawings of my plans for the addition. Hope to get feed back from everyone on improvements I should make or if its just a really dumb idea.

Re: Garage additions

Here is my old garage (a few houses ago) I attached a 22x40 with 10 ft. walls
to my 1000 sq.ft. bachlor pad. Had lots of help from my friends and family.
Only hired out the roof.

The permit process and related requirements was the worst part of the whole build.
Do the homework before you decide its what you want to do.
City/County fee's have a way of bringing costs beyond reason.

Re: Garage additions

I think adding a shop or garage to a residential home is about the same as a swimming pool. you do not do it to get your money back when you sell, you do it because you want it.
whatever you build for a garage will probably not be gained when the house is sold.
the exception might be if you do all the work yourself, and there was no garage at all previously.
