where to get shifter for 1988 5 speed

My shifter is full of slop, parts seem to be worn/missing. I am starting to have trouble getting into some gears and am hoping its the shifter and not the trans itself.

It is a 1988 1500 5 speed.

So far the only new shifter I have found is for 97 and up nad says it will not work on the older transmission.

Don't really want to spend $300 on a Hurst shifter.

Anyone know? I tried Rock auto and could not find it listed.

You may be able to fix the old shifter.

There is a small pin in the shifter that breaks and can cause what you are experiencing.

There should be a few threads about in on the board here.

Here is one of the threads I kept a link to:

You're welcome!

Let us know if that was the problem.

This builds a database for people doing a search.

Re: where to get shifter for 1988 5 speed

One of these pins were loose. It looks like the big ring that holds them may have broke?

tgat is after I pushed the pin back on and ran the big ring back thru it.

That made the shifteruch better, but dod not fix my problem.
I drained the fluid, it looked awful.
There was What looked like a roll pin stuck on the plug with many small shavings.
Added new fluid, did not fix it.

I think my sycros are shot.

Re: where to get shifter for 1988 5 speed

I have never seen one crack like that before.
I would not fix that transmission.
I don't like the design of this transmission and would look for the newer design transmission out of a 1993 or newer truck.
Note: Don't use 80W90 in these transmissions

Here are several threads with some of my discussion on the GM 5 speed transmissions known as the Getrag.

If you do a search you should be able to find many more posts by me on that transmission.

Re: where to get shifter for 1988 5 speed

I've read a few of them.

I went with 5w30 mobil1 based on other threads.

Definatly don't plan on spending any more money on this transmission!

Thanks for the help!

Re: where to get shifter for 1988 5 speed

I can't complain, transmission has 270,000 miles on it and the last 10,000 vehing a somewhat healthy 355.
