our new burb

Picked this gem up today for a whopping sum of $475 bucks. It is a 91 1500 Scottsdale. It looks to be mostly original. The only thing that is said to be wrong with it is a cracked flywheel. It will start and run. Seems to have a quite severe fuel leak at the back of the motor. We plan to fix the flywheel and fuel leak and get tires and after we get it inspected and registered lower it. I just picked up the trailer a few weeks ago and just got it inspected today. Never towed anything with it. only loaded my 64 beetle on it to see if it would go up the ramps. Anyways it held the big ole girl. Even more surprising is how well the truck towed it. The truck for sure knew it was back there but did not complain much at all. It did not even really squat much. I did keep it in 3rd the whole time. But we made the hour drive back with no issues. I do need help finding lowering stuff of it. it has been far too long scene i have looked for lowering stuff.

Re: our new burn

Pulled the trans last night. Went pretty well. Had my 8 year old daughter under there helping me. Did find some more broke stuff. Found out why the flywheel broke too. The trans mounting bolts were complealy backed out on the driver side. Also the rear trans mount was busted and the rear u joint was about to escape. Other then that I seen no rust at all. The rear main seal is not leaking. Hope to pick up the extra parts I need today and put the new flywheel back on it and start it and see where it is leaking fuel out the back of the motor.

Re: our new burb

Awesome score for the money! Looks like a straight forward fix for the flexplate/transmission. Any updates on the fuel leak yet?

Re: our new burb

Not yet. I plan to put the flywheel on tonight and maybe run the motor and see where it's coming from

Re: our new burb

Got the flywheel installed and started the motor up. Found fuel leak was a hole in the return line from rubbing the cab. With no replacements available that I have found so far I chose do cut the flex line off the steal line then put hose over it and double clamp it to the original return line that goes from the tbi to the frame. At the frame line I just moved the nut back and crammed the hose over the flare where the o ring went. Also double clamped that hose. I chose to cut the line cause it is all pre bent to go around all the crap on the intake manifold. Dorman sells hose ends that are a few inches long but then I would have to had a longer rubber hose and run it threw the intake junk. Started it up and no leaks yay!!! Also got the trans bolted back in place and mostly hooked up. Just need the converter bolts and the drive shaft and install new u joint. The mount I picked up at work for the trans was complealy incorrect so we had to go back to the store and pick up the correct one. Think so far I have about 50 bucks in parts.

Re: our new burb

Took the ole girl for a test drive last night..... Only has first and second gear. Dang it. It also runs very very rich. Trying to decide if we are gonna fix her or sell her. Just wish I knew someone that would rebuild this trans pretty cheap.

Re: our new burb

Yeah that's a tough one. Might be worth it to ask around and see what you can get a stock rebuild done for.

Re: our new burb

Good score. I'm not sure where your from but there is a guy near me in Pensacola, FL who rebuilds TH350s for $350 and 700r4s for $700. Good luck and keep us posted.

Re: our new burb

Ya. He had it loaded up on the trailer and had a guy come look at it and passed on it. So the wife wanted to wash it cause the bottom was filled with mud while it was up on the trailer and I think she fell back in love. Today she was trying to figure out how to buy a transmission with the money we have. Guess next time we won't wash it...

Looks great! I saw that you cut out half a coil, but what was done for a drop before you got it? Spindles? What about the back?

Re: our new burb

It was all factory before I lowered it. I took 2 of the 5 leafs out of each side in the rear. I keep the two top ones and the very bottom overload spring. The front I took out one coil and then a week later a half coil.

Re: our new burb

Thanks for the info. I plan on flipping the rear and doing a spindle / spring drop in the future, but just may use your method in the meantime. I have too many money sucking things going on right now as it is.

Re: our new burb

I looked into a flip kit and didn't look like it would work without notching the frame. So I just lowered it for free. Rides so smooth very happy with it.

Re: our new burb

Keep us up to date on it as you get more miles on the front springs. I'll be interested to see if it settles too much for your liking after time.

Will let you know. Drove it to work a few times and has not settled at all. I would be ok if it did. I think my shocks are bottoming out. They are factory length.

Re: our new burb

Finally got it aligned. Seems to be running rich sometimes then lean sometimes. I had a code for coolant temp sensor and found the sensor connector had spread pins. Replaced the coolant temp sensor and connector. That code seems to be gone. But I now have code 45 I think. Showing o2 sensor lean. I have read that the coolant temp sensor and map sensor are the most likely cause of rich/lean running. Picked up a map sensor and am going to give it a shot. Hope it helps. If not I will change the o2 sensor.

Re: our new burb

Well I'm pretty sure the ole gal has a leaking intake manifold gasket or leaking head gasket. It loosing a lot of coolant and not really leaking externally. If you rev it up on decell it white smokes a good bit. Also has a good bit of lifter and quite possibly rod noise. So I found a used motor from a friend and am gonna swap it out this weekend or next weekend. I plan on doing a ls swap soon so don't really want to spend any money on this motor so I hope it's better then the current one. Compleat tbi 350 for 200 bucks can't be too bad of a deal.

It was traded for money owed. Had a broken flywheel the first owner thought was a rod knock. Guy I bought it from seen it was broken flywheel.
