72 was the first year they were glued to the windshield.

I don't think any of the 72s had the screwed-on bracket from the factory.

Re: should my 72 k5 have the mirror glued to

Vin says its a 72 and and everything ive stripped down matches the white color on spid. I got the original (rotten) doors when i bought it. They were same green paint over original white as the rest of the truck and were 72 doors.
I recently painted red and replaced windshield-- looking to replace rear view when it occured to me its screwed to frame

The bulge in the frame is present on 72 Blazers but the mirror is glued to the windshield. I suspect a previous owner liked the earlier style mirrors.

I liked the 71 style better so I went with that. The windshield mount was a safety standard they started so the mirror would break away in the event of a crash where your cranium hit the windshield because almost nobody wore seatbelts back in the day.

I would just mount the earlier style mirror since yours has the holes already.
Unless you plan on entering it in a car show where they judge you for incorrect restoration, nobody will ever notice.

Or... those are really small holes, and you could fill them and spot paint and I don't think it would be noticeable at all. It's really about your preference.

If you drive fast enough, you wont need that mirror. ;-)
