Finally bought another Suburban

Many years ago I sold my '72 Suburban that I affectionately named the "bronze beast". Many newer Suburbans and several '67-'72 trucks later.....oops, I almost left out the Dodge Town Wagon I bought (because I couldn't find a decent Suburban) I fianlly brought home a 1972 K20 Suburban.

The best news is the truck is unmolested and everything is there.

Pics to follow later

Nice Burb! Looks like a good list of options. How'd you find it?

A friend spotted it in a storage lot near Tomball. He knew I was looking for one.

The engine appears to be a L82 from a '78 Pacecar Corvette. Trans is a TH350. Would a 3/4 ton had a TH400 from the factory? The Eaton rear is gone and a 14 bolt is in it's place.

Re: Finally bought another Suburban

I remember that truck in Tomball. When I started looking for an old Burb a year ago, it was on Craigslist. I wanted it , so I emailed seller. No response. The ad stayed up so I emailed again. No answer. I dropped it, but then the seller renewed the ad! So I emailed again, no answer. By that time I had found my current Burb and had it shipped to Houston. And then about a month later, I get an email from the guy saying "still interested"?

I never even got to see it. How is it?

Like a 40 year truck would be; a mix of good and bad.

The good:
  • Like you said, well optioned
  • Doesn't look like it's ever been wrecked and is 99% complete
  • Runs strong and drives straight.
  • Rockers and floor look good
  • Has original dealer installed tow hooks
  • Seats have been redone. New foam and covers

The not so good:
  • Steering box needs to be rebuilt
  • Miss matched gear ratios front to rear. The Eaton was replaced with a 14 bolt
  • Some rust thru on the doors, upper wheel arches, lower tail gate
  • A/C compressor is on a box in the back. Was not reinstalled after engine transplant.

Great looking Suburban. Nice find.

The 14-bolt is a great unit. Tough as nails and easy to get replacement parts for. Not so much the HO52/72 they replaced. I moved this to the good side of your list.

What gears are in it front & rear now?
